Project Kuiper is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of over 3,000 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Its mission is to bring fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world. Project Kuiper will help close the digital divide by delivering fast, affordable broadband to a wide range of customers, including consumers, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in places without reliable connectivity.

Kuiper is looking for an experienced Principal, Global Trade Compliance Strategy to drive compliance solutions and strategic projects in support of Kuiper's expanding global businesses. As a compliance leader in a fast-paced environment, you can expect to leverage your import/export and regulatory knowledge to translate complex issues into opportunities. Alongside our growing team, you will use a combination of subject matter expertise and business acumen to think outside the box and influence direction. You can expect to make an impact by executing core functions such as; working across subject matter experts to identify compliance requirements, recommending and implementing control mechanisms to mitigate risk, and diving deep into program specific requirements to define compliance solutions. You will successfully balance moving fast to unblock short-term issues with our long-term needs from a compliance, strategic and financial perspective. This role includes interacting with and influencing a variety of internal and external stakeholders including Engineering, Operations, Procurement, Supply Chain, Legal, Tax, Public Policy and other partners.

Export Control Requirements: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Key job responsibilities

  • Operate as focal leader for compliance related readiness for Kuiper global trade expansions, emerging programs and strategic initiatives

  • Proactively identify compliance requirements, risks and manage mitigations by establishing policies, processes, and mechanisms

  • Work cross-functionally to help achieve execution against regulatory requirements and internal policies

  • Deep dive complex regulator topics including customs valuation, duty mitigation, various supply chain models and complex trade barriers (product compliance, licenses, encryption and certification)

  • Drive compliance program integration with Kuiper business teams and supply chain

  • Develop and oversee change management and nearly continuous process improvement - including input to audit and oversight mechanisms

  • Educate leadership on the appropriate execution of compliance requirements

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution

  • 10+ years of direct experience with customs and trade compliance along with an understanding of complex trade topics including valuation, duty mitigation, classification

  • 10+ years of experience commensurate with extensive knowledge of handling product compliance, imports and/or exports for non-US jurisdictions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Overall business acumen including experience working with finance, tax, and supply chain to define scalable cross-functional process

  • A penchant for working with pace - you move quickly on deliverables, thrive on ambiguity and are not afraid to experiment

  • Seasoned program management skills backed up by a track record of working independently to break down problems and deliver results

  • Experience defining KPIs to measure compliance and communicate business value

  • Self-motivated with critical attention to detail, deadlines and reporting

  • Industry specific certifications (e.g. Licensed Customs Broker)

  • Meets/exceeds Amazon’s leadership principles requirements for this role

  • Meets/exceeds Amazon’s functional/technical depth and complexity for this role

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $127,800/year in our lowest geographic market up to $273,300/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
