Microsoft Corporation Principal Engineering Manager in Redmond, Washington

The payments team sits in the Commerce and Ecosystems (C&E) organization and is the heart of all commerce activity at Microsoft such as Xbox, Office and Azure. We are looking for an experienced Principal Engineering Manager to develop the data strategy to shape the next generation of fintech experiences and platform capabilities for Microsofts ecosystem of products. As a Principal Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for designing and executing payment data architecture. You will set the stage for payments to be a data led organization and will align with product and cross functional teams, strategize, and define engagement models and surface areas to address and help us manage our business more effectively in terms of customer credit, enhance cart performance, improve our subscription churn rates, cash flow positions, collection and build predictive model for write off and make an impact to overall customer experiences, revenue realization and revenue risks, as well as ArtificiaI Intelligence/Copilot models. Youwill own all current payment data models including the ingestion and processing pipelines and outputs.By engaging and presenting you will ensurealignment and deliver Data and Knowledge Foundations.

This role will be accountable for executing on data for First-party payments facilitated by Microsoft, Third-party payments facilitated by Microsoft, Cash, liquidity position, payments strategy across all Microsoft product teams such as gaming, advertising, Experiences & Devices, Azure, LinkedIn, HoloLens, and GitHub, along with Microsoft Corporate, External, Legal Affairs and Finance. The ideal candidate should haveexperience working in data engineering roles focused on user experience, platform capabilitieswith requirements impacting an ecommerce platform, customer empathy, FinTech/Fin Services or ecommerce, and running technical and business programs in parallel.

In addition to the data platform development work, the position also includes building and maintaining existing financial reconciliation solutions for Microsoft, ensuring alignment between Microsoft and its financial partners.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver success through empowerment and accountability by modeling, coaching, and caring; by helping the team adapt and learn, you will invest in the growth of others.

  • Oversee team efforts and design discussions for overall system architecture of entire solution that are deeply complex; provide technical and people leadership to assure system architecture meets security and compliance requirements and expectations.

  • Oversee cross-collaboration efforts to ensure data is prepared in a multi-functional approach; support team in understanding key technologies and tools necessary for data exploration (e.g., SQL, Python, Spark).

  • Provide technical leadership for identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service or platform; lead identification of other teams and technologies that will be leveraged, how they will interact, and when one's system may provide support to others.

  • Identify best practices and coding patterns and provide deep expertise on coding and validation strategy; define or reuse quality metrics, best practices, and coding patterns to ensure testable code.

  • Develop new predictive and prescriptive models using advanced research techniques with a goal of productionalized solutions; direct the development of experimental methodologies, statistics, optimization, and probability theory for general purpose software and statistical packages.

  • Oversee data and statistical analyses conducted across multiple teams working on a feature or system.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • At least 6 years of experience with setting up complex data pipelines and handling big-data at scale

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 4+ years people management experience.

  • Expertise in Payments, Payments processing, financial services or Fintech

Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
