Microsoft Corporation Principal Design Manager in Redmond, Washington

The Business Application Platform (BAP) team is looking for a Principal Design Manager for Power Pages. This is fast growing product, with a global team, where you can explore your passions and are empowered to do your best work. Your focus will be on leading the team to deliver on our vision of making it easy for companies to transform their businesses through the creation of secure, beautiful, smart websites that are engaging for both customers and partners. You will be leveraging Microsoft’s investment in AI and Copilot to help both creators and users get results faster and accessing Microsoft’s deep enterprise knowledge to solve tough business problems for our customers.

As the Principal Design Manager you will be working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary design team, Project Manager and Engineering, to accelerate our ability to deliver value to our customers at speed. You will be creating clarity in a complex organizational environment, generating energy through a bias towards action, and delivering results against all aspects of the customers experience by elevating research-driven insights and experience excellence to division leadership, influencing product direction and decision-making. This opportunity will allow you to develop deep business acumen and hone your skills to rapidly innovate, as you help define the next generation of business applications. This role is flexible in that you will be able to partner with your Manager to define the way that you’d like to work, whether that is in the office or from home.

You’re a tireless advocate for the customer—enthusiastic about building and iterating on product solutions to explore, iterate and discover what works best, applying your knowledge to create incredible software products.

You understand how to bring a team together to solve difficult product and customer problems, fixing what's not quite right and smoothing the customer’s journey through the product and have recent examples that showcase this experience.

You're fluent in communicating with product managers and developers as well as influencing team members to simplify, integrate, and leverage cross initiatives that accelerate your ability to deliver value to customers at speed. And you’re comfortable influencing others around you to land solutions that help make innovative apps that customers will love.

Responsibilities

As a Principal Design Manager

  • Work with a multidisciplinary and cross-product team to deliver beautiful end-to-end user experiencesthat drive business value

  • Actively work with product partners to prioritize workstreams to balance the team'sability to deliver value quickly, while balancing long term vision and strategy

  • Actively and responsibly champion customers, using direct feedback, user research, industry knowledge, and quantitative metrics to enhance and optimize user experiences.

  • Through active coaching, you will model empathy and humility resulting in a highly engaged organization and a culture of management excellence across your team as evidenced by your employee collective feedback

  • You will be comfortable with ambiguity and deal with complex situations by creating clarity for your direct reports, your PM and Engineering counterparts and colleagues across the Design and Research Studio. 

  • Collaboration with senior leadership to formulate, refine and introduce plans that enable the team to drive generative AI investments.

  • As a leader you will build organizational capability and steward talent management resulting in a diverse and inclusive team as measured by standard organizational health performance indicators.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 8+ years experience working in product or service design

  • OR Master's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 6+ years experience working in product or service design

  • OR equivalent experience (e.g., experience using design thinking to solve problems).

  • 3+ years people management experience.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experiernce in leading projects, teams, and products end-2-end with multidisciplinary partners.

  • Portfolio that showcases solid design skills and a bias towards forward-thinking solutions. 

  • Experience in a fast paced, environment.

  • An understanding of AI, LLMs (Large Language Models) and GPTs (generative pre-trained transformers)

Product Design M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
