Summary:

As an Optical Scientist at Facebook, you will take a critical role in developing AR/VR systems. You will focus on developing advanced optical imaging and sensing systems for near eye displays, and will become part of a team exploring new concepts through design and fast iterative prototyping. A wide range of approaches will be explored combining electrical, mechanical, and optical techniques. We are looking for a hands-on engineer with a productive mindset who can apply their optics expertise to solve problems in creative, insightful ways. Our ideal candidate has a strong background in optical design, optical instrumentation, sensing and detection, and/or testing and metrology.

Required Skills:

  1. Collaborate in a team environment across a diverse set of disciplines including Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, and Optics

  2. Collaborate with the larger FRL team and provide creative leadership on computational display, imaging, and sensing technologies

  3. Design and implement metrology systems for optical characterization

  4. Design and implement optical sensors for active calibration and closed loop control

  5. Develop test strategies for optical sensing systems

  6. Coordinate with vendors to prototype lens designs

  7. Lead hardware calibration efforts of optical systems in collaboration with cross-functional partners

  8. Model optical transmission, coating performance, and stray light analysis of both individual components, optical assemblies, and full optical systems using a combination of sequential and non-sequential methods

  9. Model, analyze, and develop tolerances for optical distortions in both static and dynamic systems

  10. Publish research results in top-tier journals and at leading international conferences

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. PhD in Optics, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Robotics, Applied Optics, or equivalent

  2. 3+ years experience with optical design software, Code V, Zemax, FRED, or Lighttools or Lumerical

  3. 3+ years experience with optical instrumentation, emphasizing modeling and hardware prototyping

  4. 3+ years of experience with optics technologies with one or more of the following: imaging, optical design, illumination, physical optics, stray light analysis, radiometry, and photometry

  5. 3+ years experience in applied research or product development of optics or photonic systems

  6. 3+ years of experience with laboratory work in setting up of optical systems and optical sensors

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience with sensor design, electronics, or circuit design

  2. Experience with vision science and perception

  3. Experience with optical coatings and associated vendors

  4. Experience with diffractive optics

  5. Experience with COMSOL modeling

  6. Experience maturing a design from proof of concept to volume prototypes or taking your own design into production

  7. Experience with full design chain: first order layout, design, material selection, opto-mechanical interaction, tolerancing, thermal control, supplier selection, supplier management, test and manufacturing evaluation

  8. Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by product launches, grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at top-tier journals or leading conferences
