Meta Optical Coatings Design Engineer in Redmond, Washington

Summary:

The Viewing Optics Engineering Team is looking for a creative Optical Coatings Engineer to design and develop Optical coatings solutions for next generation Display & Optics system for Meta products. You can handle a high degree of ambiguity in product definition, play a critical role in the product engineering process, including product definition, scoping, task management & prioritization, rollout and launch. You are good at making the right engineering tradeoffs in the context of a wider product or project goal. You are sought as a technical mentor, who make the team more effective by bringing in best practices, identifying & removing bottlenecks, mentoring team members, as well as avoiding common pitfalls. Other engineers and managers look to you for your experience and expertise in the product development process.

Required Skills:

Optical Coatings Design Engineer Responsibilities:

  1. Design optical coatings and process to enable innovative optical system design by working with internal teams and external vendors.

  2. Understand the component, module and system level constraints for Viewing Optics to bound the coating design enabling solutions allowed within tradespace.

  3. Develop end to end solutions from designing the stack to developing process for enabling mass production.

  4. Design coatings based on optical, mechanical, thermal and physical properties of coated materials and coated stack including Polarization, spectral control, Stress Management, Formability, Reliability and thickness control.

  5. Prototype and validate novel optical coatings designs, and identify potential issues for mass productions.

  6. Design the coatings for plastics and Glass substrates.

  7. Collaborate with cross functional teams to conduct thorough evaluations on trade offs of different optical film designs and process to find best-in-class optical film solutions for Meta’s VR products.

  8. Domestic and or International travel 10%.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor degree in materials science & engineering, polymer science & engineering, chemical engineering, optical engineering or related fields or equivalent industry experience.

  2. Knowledge of coating software like Macleod, TFCalc or Optiliayer.

  3. 5+ years of experience with optical coatings prototyping and development.

  4. Knowledge of coating technologies like Physical Vapor deposition, Chemical Vapor Deposition, Atomic Layer Deposition, Wet coating or Web coatings.

  5. Experience and knowledge of thin-film characterization techniques (e.g. coating stress characterization, ellipsometry, FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDX, RBS, and SIMS).

  1. PhD in materials science & engineering, Physics, optical engineering, related fields or equivalent industry experience.

  2. Solid understanding of Plasma Physics and deposition technologies fundamentals, Material properties and applications.

  3. Experience in designing for color, Light Incidence and spectral control.

  4. Expert in design of thin film filters, Beamsplitter, Anti reflection, Polarizers and broadband optical solutions.

Public Compensation:

$167,000/year to $230,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits
