Materials Engineer III

SIGMADESIGN has collaborated with a consumer electronics company seeking an experienced Optical Engineer to join their facility in Redmond, WA. This position is a contract with an expected duration of 12 months with the opportunity to be extended.

  • Salary: $110,000-140,000/year DOE

    This role is full-time in-office.

    Primary Function:

    As a Materials Engineer (III), you will be able to work with our client’s Research team to make polymer materials for next-generation human-computer interaction devices/technologies. You will be expected to work closely with the materials testing, modeling, system design and integration teams to develop novel polymer materials with target properties. You will also be expected to execute materials molding and integration for research prototypes development.

    Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:

  • Make formulations for novel polymer materials development to enable next-generation wearable devices for the client’s applications.

  • Compound polymer resins with inorganic fillers for desired electrical and mechanical properties.

  • Mold and cure the compounded resins with desired geometries for hardware integration.

  • Conduct mechanical/electrical property tests, and reliability tests;

  • Organize test data to support structure-properties relationship understanding for materials development.

  • Collaborate with hardware engineers on device integration.

    Education and Experience: (Knowledge, skills, & abilities)

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical, Material Science, Chemical Engineering or similar

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in polymer formulating, compounding, and molding or equivalent combination of experience.

  • 3+ years of experience in material characterization skills like FTIR, rheology, TGA, DSC, tensile testing, etc.

  • Experience collaborating and communicating effectively in team settings.

  • Knowledge in curable resins, and thermoplastic/thermoset polymers.

  • Experience working in a rapid prototyping environment is a plus.

  • Strong written and verbal English language communication skills.

  • Excellent teamwork/interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, both within and outside one's own work group.

    Preferred Education and Experience: (Knowledge, skills, & abilities)

  • MS in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or Equivalent Experience;

  • 3+ years of experience in material characterization skills like SEM, AFM, XPS, pycnometer, four-point probe, etc;

  • Experience with duo-shot injection molding, etc;

  • Experience in surface treatment and characterization;

  • Experience of resin development for additive manufacturing;

  • Experience with flexible/stretchable electronic materials, etc.

    Work Environment

    LAB: Standard lab/production environment. Appropriate safety garments (PPE) must be worn. Occasionally may be required to work in environmental conditions that emulate typical user environments in order to facilitate design testing and validation. Occasionally may be required to travel as required to other facilities, clients or suppliers. Must be able to stand and work as long as 12 hours in different positions. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.

    ENGINEERING: Standard office environment with normal amounts of office related conditions. Occasionally may be required to work in environmental conditions that emulate typical user environments in order to facilitate design testing and validation.  Occasionally may be required to travel as required to other facilities, clients or suppliers.
