Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The Microsoft portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. Responsibilities

As Datacenter Telecom Engineer-AMER , you will effectively and efficiently drive the design of all aspects of the physical networking infrastructure during design and address any design-related issues that arise during construction for all Microsoft datacenters/co-location facilities.

As Datacenter Telecom Engineer- AMER, you will investigate existing facilities and determine necessary facility telecommunication scope to bring site in compliance with the latest Microsoft standards. They will work with a variety of partners to successfully deliver project design requirements. This may entail leading design workgroups and participating in cross-functional meetings for multiple, concurrent capital projects. You will be tasked to manage issues and decisions while identifying and elevating risks.

As a critical thinker, you will develop Scopes of Work and design documents, then review bids and options for physical telecommunication infrastructure (Layer 0) and optical cabling including both Inside Plant (ISP) / Structured Cabling Solution (SCS) and Outside Plant (OSP); and be able to evaluate operational impacts, deployment, and implementation challenges associated with retrofit designs for both Microsoft Owned facilities and Lease sites; utilize established telecommunication requirements to design special, non-conforming projects, retrofits, refreshes, and other duties as assigned.

  • Utilizing established documentation and standards, provide datacenter Layer 0 telecommunications designs (Specifications, Drawings, Schedules and Bill of Materials) and / or direction to Architectural / Engineering (A/E) firms for outside design work. The design work shall consist of Basis of Design (BOD) to Issue for Constructions (IFC) and through the Construction Administration phase of datacenter until handover for retrofits and network upgrades, new datacenters, existing space buildouts, leases, and / or special projects. Identifies and communicates opportunities for technical improvements or processes.

  • Provide technical support on physical network refresh and rebuilds including telecommunications cable plant, pathways, and translating telecommunication requirements to other disciplines.

  • Address existing condition investigations, identify and elevate risk to relevant partners, and create telecommunication scope of work to retrofit and network upgrades in existing facilities to latest Microsoft standards.

  • Partner directly with cross organizational teams such as engineering design teams, delivery teams, operations teams, contractors, and suppliers.

  • Provide guidance to staff augmentation A/Es.

  • Be highly organized and able to oversee concurrent projects and focus under pressure.

  • Exhibit structured thinking and logic with very proficient analytical skills.

  • Creatively approach problem solving and ability to think out of the box.

  • Provide remote site support for construction teams.

  • Conduct site visits (in person or virtual as needed) to review all stages of the construction and ensure quality is being maintained.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

  • 5+ years of large-scale facility networking infrastructure projects within datacenters or other comparable experience (healthcare, enterprise, large retail, critical environments, government etc.)

  • Experience of industry standards, building codes and safety standards including BICSI Standards, TDMM, RUS Standards, ANSI/IEEE/IEC, NFPA, NEC, and building codes.

  • Ability to lead multiple projects of varying timelines while managing project expectations.

  • Experience with high-level construction administration.

  • Experience with Bluebeam

  • Experience using Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel including effective reporting/presentations of project information.

Other requirements :

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

  • Professional Engineer or equivalent per county of residence

  • BICSI RCDD or DCDC certified

  • Familiarity with ground-up construction, greenfield and brownfield site development requirements.

  • Action-oriented with a passion for getting things done quickly, efficiently, and effectively.

  • Ability to balance varying responsibilities that span rhythm of business, communications, executive management, and culture.

  • Prior experience with Visio

  • Experience with CAD programs such as AutoCAD or Revit.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.

  • Effective written and verbal communications skills.

  • Understanding of mission critical environments and the associated telecommunications facility considerations for Layer 0.

Hardware Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $94,300 - $182,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $120,900 - $198,600 per year.
