Microsoft Corporation Cryogenic Assembly Engineer in Redmond, Washington

Microsoft Research has been studying quantum computing for several years and has become the world's center of expertise on topological quantum computing. The research effort includes a staff of theoretical physicists and experimental teams around the world. The Redmond team is building a controls system for quantum computing that is based on a classical computer architecture. The overall system is being developed by a multi-disciplinary team that includes software and hardware architects. The control system is a general-purpose computing platform that can perform complex, high performance computing functions. 

This is a key role in Microsoft’s new Quantum Computing Group.

The job would involve the fabrication, final assembly, and proof testing of leading edge cryogenic computing systems.


  • Design weld preparation for critical cryogenic joints with aluminum and stainless alloys.

  • Provide engineering input on component design for thermal cycling & fabrication reliability.

  • Perform TIG welding operation for helium tight welds.

  • Design and build welding and test fixtures

  • Conduct helium leak test on completed assemblies using mass spectrometer helium leak detector.

  • Locate and repair cryogenic leaks on installed systems.


  • 5 years' experience as Certified Welder of aluminum and stainless alloys.

  • 3 years' experience in weld prep design for high vacuum components.

  • 3 years' experience in metals fabrication methods including milling, turning, sawing and bending & forming.

  • Ability to generate basic CAD models from SolidWorks or comparable CAD Software.

  • Demonstrate ability to set up welder and perform helium leak free weld.
