Cascade Engineering Services Battery Development Engineer in Redmond, Washington

 Are you looking to join a fast-paced team delivering industry-leading products? The Surface organization is looking for a talented individual to join the Battery Development team to design and characterize leading edge battery packs. As a Battery Development Engineer, you’ll be working in our R&D team analyzing and parsing data, developing/testing battery technologies, and helping build the tools that enable us to run mission-critical tests.  

To be successful, you will need to collaborate across a variety of internal functional groups and with external development partners. You will work closely with suppliers and across the industry to vet, prioritize, and develop new cell technology through direct characterization and qualification. You will work closely with Microsoft battery data, exploring datasets for new insights, applying statistical analysis, and extracting key performance indicators. You will use these datasets to model battery performance, degradation, and use cases which further inform battery design and testing. You will also be responsible for developing new battery characterization techniques and analysis methods for finding meaningful insight in battery data. This role will entail building/expanding Microsoft's battery lab capabilities, including training laboratory staff, optimizing processes, and onboarding new equipment. 

Plan and oversee battery testing operations on a large scale

Manage and instruct engineers, technicians, and operators on how to test batteries, monitor and process data, and keep test schedule on track

Complex data processing and analysis 

Report generation and summarization

Oversee and identify issues with battery testing and results

Execute battery testing and characterization 

Analyze battery characterization data and extract critical insights 

Design of Experiments (DOE) for battery testing  

Setup advanced battery test equipment (hardware/scripting/reporting)  

Creation of new documentation, Standard Operating Procedures, and templates  

Support lab operations/tasks as needed 

Requirements

Qualifications

  • MS in Materials Science, Electrochemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or similar; PhD desired. 

  • 4+ years of battery-related work experience 

  • In-depth knowledge of Li-ion battery chemistry, operation, and performance including charging, discharging, safety, impedance, aging, cycle life, temperature effects, failure modes, handling and pack assembly methods, processes, and procedures 

  • Proficiency in writing detailed and accurate test protocols  

  • In-depth experience with battery testers, such as Maccor, Arbin, Neware, etc.  

  • Excellent problem-solving/troubleshooting/debug skills 

  • Familiar and confident in battery-related laboratory characterization analysis, such as cell disassembly, CT-Scan, EIS, and so on.

  • Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE), Multi-factorial experiment for battery testing and data management processes.

  • Skill in creating clear and concise summaries.

  • Technical drive and curiosity for understanding all aspects of battery cell and pack design and manufacturing.

  • Advanced experience with battery data collection, data storage, data manipulation and analysis; Experience in large-scale data/test management is desired 

  • Passion for critical thinking, improving processes, sharing with others, and learning from others.
