The Education (EDU) team at Microsoft is transforming the way we learn and teach by developing innovative software solutions which are reshaping classrooms and empowering educators and students alike. EDU is hiring an Applied Scientist II to build applications and services to revolutionize the teaching and learning experience worldwide in the dynamic and rapidly evolving education technology industry.
As an Applied Scientist II , you will use your software development skills and Python proficiency, to help define and create innovative solutions using Multimodal Machine Learning models enabling the next generation of education experiences across devices and platforms. You will have the opportunity to develop AI and ML-powered platform components and workflows accessible across Microsoft 365 and Windows. You will work closely with cross functional teams to adopt requirements and define the direction to adopt these components into systems.

Responsibilities
Research, develop, and implement AI solutions in application projects for Microsoft’s products and services.
Identify, research, and implement machine learning solutions given product requirements.
Adopt, contribute to, and improve the team’s existing technical stack and infrastructure to build differentiated features in the Education space.
Stay up to date with AI technology, communicate your knowledge on how we can adapt and embrace new technologies methodologies and ideas.
Provide hands-on technical work: design, analytics/modeling and fine tuning, dataset development, code reviews, development, quality assurance.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 2+ years data science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
OR Master's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 1+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
OR Doctorate in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field
OR equivalent experience.
Experience coding in Python in an AI ecosystem.
Hands on experience training/fine tuning AI/ML models.
Strong foundational knowledge of statistics and core data science concepts, including data preprocessing, feature engineering, predictive modeling and experimentation.
Practical experience in building and optimizing Generative AI pipelines, including techniques like Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), model deployment at cloud scale, function calling, and grounding.
Other Requirements
Abiity to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements that are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications
3+ years of AI/ML industry experience.
Experience in LLMs/SLMs/multi-modal models/probabilistic graphical models/Bayesian networks/deep learning/reinforcement learning/time series/active learning, or other modeling paradigms.
Track record of shipping innovative AI-based products at scale.
Extensive and up to date knowledge and experience with LLM and other modern AI methods.
Programming skills with languages like TypeScript.
1+ year(s) experience creating publications of AI research (e.g., patents, peer-reviewed academic papers).
Applied Sciences IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.
