The Microsoft Security AI Research team is responsible for defending Microsoft and our customers through applied AI innovation. In doing so, we create life-changing innovations that impact billions of lives around the world.  Defending Microsoft’s complex environment provides a unique opportunity to build and evaluate autonomous defense and offense through emerging generative AI capabilities. Microsoft understands and learns from its own defensive and offensive expertise, including via teams like Microsoft’s Threat Intelligence Center and Microsoft’s Red Team, and has the opportunity to build a unique knowledge graph describing the relationship between risk, investigation, and response. This data, built over Microsoft’s complex digital estate, along with Microsoft AI forms the foundation for innovative solutions to defend Microsoft.

We are looking for an Applied AI Engineer to join our applied science team to reshape how we defend Microsoft. You will actively innovate by leveraging and building upon a broad set of research from Microsoft, academia, and industry to develop novel AI methods, frameworks, and systems to enhance our defensive and red teaming capabilities. You will collaborate with internal and external partners on real-world scenarios and challenges and deliver scalable, reliable, and secure AI solutions. Responsibilities

  • You will document work in progress and share findings to promote innovation within a group. You’ll also learn and follow ethics and privacy policies while executing research processes or collecting information.

  • You will apply strategies provided by senior team members and incorporate state-of-the-art research that builds transformative defensive and red teaming AI capabilities with demonstrated scientific rigor.

  • Work with defenders, threat hunters, PMs, researchers and engineers to turn research into effective solutions that improve our ability to protect ourselves.

  • Build industry leading systems that are scalable, reliable, and secure with appropriate monitoring and alerting.

  • You will document work in progress and share findings to promote innovation within a group. You’ll also learn and follow ethics and privacy policies while executing research processes or collecting information.

  • Follow release management policies to ensure data integrity, compliance, and system stability.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline AND 2+ years related experience (e.g., technical engineering, applied research)

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline AND 1+ years related experience (e.g., technical engineering, applied research)

  • OR Doctorate in in Computer Science, or related technical discipline

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 1+ years of experience in shipping ML/AI-based services or applications.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft background and Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with generative AI/ agentic frameworks, multi modal models, training and fine-tuning of transformer-based models, information retrieval or reinforcement learning

  • Experience in safety and ethical aspects of AI.

  • Experience in working with large-scale datasets.

  • Experience in cyber security and safety domains, such as malware detection, fraud prevention, cyber-physical systems, adversary tradecraft, emerging threats or SOC operations

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to simplify and explain complex ideas.

Applied Sciences IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.
