The Opportunity:

 

The Office of the University Ombuds' at Washington State University (WSU) invites candidates to apply for the Ombuds part-time open position. You will be responsible for protecting the interests, rights, and privileges of students, staff, and faculty at all levels and locations of WSU operations and programs. The Ombuds is a neutral, informal, independent, and confidential resource to all members of the university community. The Ombuds Office provides information about WSU policies and procedures and operates following the standards and ethics of the https://www.ombudsassociation.org/standards-of-practice-code-of-ethics. The office also facilitates the resolution of problems and grievances through informal investigation and mediation. The office does not supersede other university grievance, complaint, or appeal procedures.

 

In this position you will provide fair and equitable guidance and consultation to all members of the WSU community, particularly the administrative professionals and classified staff, on a broad range of issues and concerns. You will serve as a skilled, experienced, neutral mediator, and consultant. Responsible for providing guidance and assistance on complex, sensitive, and difficult issues. You will plan and carry out work independently and with minimum supervision, but in consultation with the other University Ombuds, while utilizing knowledge of university policies, procedures, and regulations. You are responsible for maintaining a confidential environment.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

• A Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of higher education experience. The Provost makes appointments to this position after soliciting nominations; incumbents must have a minimum of three (3) years of University experience and possess the necessary skills to resolve problems and mediate disputes. Additionally, incumbents must have broad knowledge of the University and available resources to provide appropriate referrals.

 

• Demonstrated knowledge of Washington State University structures, policies, and procedures.

 

• Demonstrated effective interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

 

• Demonstrated experience providing informal or formal mediation or dispute resolution processes.

 

• Demonstrated ability to interact with individuals and groups at all work levels.

 

• Demonstrated sensitivity to and desire to promote inclusivity.

 

• Demonstrated commitment to client service and the application of appropriate flexibility in response to issues and opposing points of view.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

• An earned degree beyond a bachelor's degree.

 

• Experience with formal or informal dispute resolution, conflict resolution, mediation, or negotiation processes.

 

• Awareness of Washington State Laws that affect the conduct of the Office of the Ombuds.

 

• Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver's license and meet requirements in accordance with https://policies.wsu.edu/prf/index/manuals/safety-policies-procedures-manual/sppm-7-10/#four_3 and departmental driving standards.
