The Opportunity:

As the Tribal Community Specialist in Environmental Justice and Stewardship for Washington State University's Office of Native American Programs you will broadly provide expertise and advisement on new WSU projects related to environmental justice and stewardship. One of the primary roles of this position is to engage and consult with Tribes to collaboratively develop, support, and assess a community benefits plan for the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub (PNWH2) project, that aligns with U.S. Department of Energy requirements and the Justice40 initiative.

In this position you will focus on developing and maintaining strong relationships with Tribal Nations across Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana, particularly those whose current and traditional homelands are located near the regional PNWH2 sites. Serving as the primary point of contact between Tribal Nations and the PNWH2 project team, you will ensure open communication and regular updates to promote transparency. This role will conduct consultations to gather input from Tribal Nations, provide training on meaningful and respectful Tribal engagement, and advocate for Tribal interests within the PNWH2 project and other environmental projects as needed. Additionally, you will be involved with supporting project activities, organizing Tribal engagement events, and preparing detailed reports. As the specialist you will also provide educational resources about clean energy, natural resources, and Tribal sovereignty, representing WSU Native American Programs and the PNWH2 project in various forums to enhance understanding and support for Tribal priorities.

About the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen (PNWH2) Association:

The Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Association (PNWH2) is a multi-state nonprofit coalition of public and private partners planning to create a hydrogen network in the Pacific Northwest, called the PNWH2 Hub, to develop and bring to market clean hydrogen power solutions that can help meet the nation's clean energy goals. The coalition includes the states of Washington, Oregon and Montana, and representatives from Tribal Nations, labor, business and industry, higher education, government, and the environmental community.

The PNWH2 Hub will focus on demonstrating clean and economically viable hydrogen production and use in hard-to-abate sectors to replace carbon-intensive processes. The hub's efforts will accelerate the deployment of these technologies and enable infrastructure, attract greater investments from the private sector in our region, and promote high-quality jobs in our communities with a strong focus on social equity and environmental justice as guiding principle.
