Scientific Assistant Available Title(s): 1161-YN_ADMINPRO - Scientific Assistant Business Title: Scientific Assistant Employee Type: Admin. Professional (+) (Fixed Term) Time Type: Full time Position Term: 12 Month Position Details: Summary of Duties: The Brayton lab is seeking a laboratory assistant to aid in the execution of laboratory research and management of lab resources. The project is focused on vaccine development for Anaplsma marginale. Work will include but is not limited to; DNA cloning and manipulation, quantitative PCR, protein isolation and detection, RNAseq, and assistance with animal work (Gene gun immunization). Additionally, routine laboratory maintenance and ordering duties will be required. The successful applicant will join a dedicated team focused on research, service and scholarship. Required Qualifications: • A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate related scientific discipline and three (3) years of progressively responsible related professional research experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. A Master's degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline may be substituted for up to one year of the required work experience. • Previous work with Babesia parasites. • Knowledge of laboratory safety, proper use of an automated pipette, proper use of microscope. • Skills to perform complex established protocols. • Skills to perform basic mathematical calculations required to accurately prepare solutions and dilutions. • Knowledge of how to use a computer and retrieve data. • Basic knowledge of laboratory procedures in biology, chemistry and biochemistry. • Working in a team environment. • Willingness to work with animals. Preferred Qualifications: • Knowledge of laboratory terminology, equipment, materials, and procedures, and the fundamental laboratory methods relating micro and cell biology. • Experience performing standardized laboratory tests according to prescribed procedures; calculating and recording test results; maintaining a clean, sterile, and safe laboratory environment; keeping detailed inventory of materials and samples. Physical Requirements & Working Conditions: Be able to safely work with potentially infectious material in a safe manner. Be able to safely handle potentially toxic, volatile and corrosive chemicals and/or carcinogenic substances.
