Summary of Duties:

 

As the Scholar Immigration Specialist in the ?International Student and Scholar Services unit, you will coordinate and prepare non-immigrant petitions, Labor Certification Applications, correspondence, and reports, as well as screen and/or respond to inquiries regarding case processing, eligibility, status, and related matters, under the general direction of the Senior Associate Director for Immigration Compliance. In this position you will provide essential and critical scholar immigration advising and holistic support to ensure maintenance of immigration records and appropriate lawful status, help monitor the unit email account, while having extensive contact with program participants, university departments, and outside entities, and exercises professional judgment within established guidelines. You must stay up to date on complex and current ever-changing immigration regulations and directly apply them to extremely complex scholar cases with a high level of focus on legality and record maintenance.

 

In this position you will have the opportunity to work as a liaison and petitioner with government agencies, organizations, and various stakeholders representing WSU, and maintain compliance with federal immigration regulations and reporting requirements in Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVIS) and elsewhere. This position requires knowledge of federal regulations governing F, J, and H-1B visa status.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

• Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of professional work experience in international education, immigration, or related field, including planning, policy analysis, coordination, and consultation with a variety of public and private agencies, organizations, and/or levels of government; OR equivalent education/experience.

 

• One (1) year of experience working in a customer service oriented position.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

• Bachelor's degree in related field and demonstrated interest in international arena.

 

• Knowledge of complex word processing tasks such as merging and sorting, integrated text with graphics, and creating footnotes and outlines.

 

• Strong interpersonal, cross-cultural, written, and verbal communication skills; ability to establish professional relationships with international population and campus offices and to present in front of large groups.

 

• Experience working in a higher education setting and with individuals and organizations from different cultures.

 

• Strong ability and skills in managing challenging or stressful circumstances meeting deadlines when handling multiple cases.

 

• High level of attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

 

• Excellent customer service skills; ability to interact with others in a warm, friendly, and supportive manner, creating a climate of trust, consideration, and mutual respect.

 

• Ability to work as a team as well as working independently.

 

• Demonstrated cultural sensitivity.

 

• Understanding of how immigration and academics intersect.

 

• Demonstrated ability to develop relationships and solve complex problems to ensure immigration regulations are met.
