Summary of Duties:

 

The Gang Lab in Washington State University's Institute for Biological Chemistry seeks a Research Associate to serve as Project Manager for a new multi-institutional collaborative project funded by USDA-NIFA that is developing a new class of dry beans, known as "popping beans". These beans pop/puff when heated and have very interesting properties for human health and nutrition as well as for energy saving properties when cooked/processed. The Project Manager, who will be a PhD level scientist with at least 2 years of post-doctoral experience, will have two areas of primary responsibility in the POPBEANS project. The first area will be coordinating collaborative efforts between laboratories, particularly between institutions, that are part of the project team. This individual will also work with Dr. Gang (Program Director for the project) to coordinate field trial efforts within WA state and with participating farmers in the Northeastern US and the Pacific Northwest. This individual will work directly with greenhouse managers and farm personnel in Pullman, WA. including with the National Plant Germplasm System bean curator, to coordinate the growth studies in Pullman as well as working with data collection and analysis for field trials that will be performed in central and eastern Washington State. The second area of responsibility will be to perform metabolite analyses on samples generated from the project efforts. This individual will work with the undergraduate students who will perform sample prep for the various experiments. This individual will also be responsible for overseeing research supplies and expenditure, report and publication formatting, web page design and implementation. This person will also coordinate monthly project meetings and help coordinate/organize (with Dr. Gang) the annual project meetings.

 

The position is initially available for one year, with additional appointment periods dependent on satisfactory performance and availability of continued funding. Required Qualifications:

 

• Ph.D. in a biological science, chemistry or related field.

 

• At least two years of post-doctoral research experience in a field related to the project.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

• Skillsets that will be utilized and developed include analytical chemistry and metabolomics, data analytics with R and Genstat, plant physiology, and field crop on-farm field trial set up and execution.

 

• The competitive candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills, strong organizational and leadership skills with an ability to work in teams and mentor junior scientists.

 

• Experience in managing a research project is highly desired.
