Summary of Duties:
This position integrates research and extension duties, and the successful candidate will develop a nationally and internationally recognized integrated program in participatory plant breeding focused on organic and sustainable agricultural systems in Western Washington.
The research and extension program will emphasize participatory methodologies of small grain and edible seed crops with a primary focus on buckwheat improvement for value added food quality and environmental benefits. Programs must be based on stakeholder needs and be consistent with the mission of the WSU CSS and CAHNRS Office of Research.
The successful candidate must acquire competitive extramural funding from state, regional, national and international agencies, and the agricultural industry to support a comprehensive research and outreach program. The incumbent will disseminate information by publishing in appropriate peer-reviewed journals and extension media, delivering presentations at scientific conferences and grower meetings, and using technology and other modern communication platforms. This person is expected to work collaboratively with other researchers, extension professionals, private crop consultants, the grower community, and stakeholders. The incumbent will provide select supervision of graduate students in alignment with research program priorities. If the opportunity arises, the incumbent will be expected to participate in course delivery as needed by the department. The position will also contribute to WSU's strategic focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Required Qualifications:
• By the date of hire, earned Ph.D. in plant breeding or closely related field, with sufficient depth in knowledge and applied experience in organic and sustainable farming systems in Washington State;
• Demonstrated record of scholarly accomplishments in research, extension, and/or teaching commensurate with career level.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Demonstrated experience in participatory, field-based research methodologies working with farmers and other food value-chain actors;
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with technical and nontechnical audiences in oral and written forms;
• Record of competitive grant success commensurate with career level;
• Demonstrated knowledge of organic farming and organic seed systems;
• Demonstrated ability to disseminate information using digital media;
• Demonstrated commitment to advancing the goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
