Available Title(s): 626J-YYCSNPS - Maintenance Mechanic 1 Business Title: Maintenance Mechanic 1 Employee Type: Classified Position Details: Summary of Duties: The Maintenance Mechanic 1 is responsible for work in a variety of disciplines to maintain building, equipment, farm and grounds at the Washington State University (WSU) Puyallup Research and Extension Center. The individual performs semi-skilled work in the operation and maintenance, repair, of existing buildings, facilities, mechanical equipment, machinery, and grounds and landscaping. May assist with or oversee the remodeling or construction of buildings. Leads and inspects work of hourly time-slip employees. Operates a variety hand tools, farm and grounds equipment, green house computerized controls and systems. Works independently and utilizes a general knowledge of several related skills such as plumbing, electrical, welding, carpentry and fabrication work. Facilities Maintenance | 25% • Maintenance and repair of existing buildings. • Perform the following maintenance on existing buildings: prep and paint, cleaning, locks, repair broken glass, oil pumps and motors, replace burnt light bulbs and ballasts, clean gutters, repair and replace exhaust fan motors, belts, blades, bearings, etc. • Monitor and maintain all mechanical systems of the greenhouses. • Performs work in construction and repair of interior and exterior buildings such as roofing, siding, gutters, painting and other structures, roads, pathways, walks, fences, and grounds. • Perform building security functions, repair security systems, doors, and locks; provide building access badge and key control, and key cutting. • Perform monthly checks of fire extinguishers and other safety and environmental control equipment. • Purchase supplies, parts and equipment when needed. • Lock and unlock facilities, turn heat on or off when needed, replenish supplies, remove garbage, and set up tables and chairs for events. • Operate floor scrubbers, burnishes, and vacuum cleaner. • Lead custodial building maintenance major work projects: scrubbing and waxing floors, may assist when needed. • Maintain outdoor U.S. and Washington State Flag and flag pole. Farm Maintenance | 25% • Install and maintain farm and campus sprinkler irrigation systems and winterize irrigation and outdoor plumbing systems. • Maintain current pesticide license. Performs all applications and maintain appropriate pesticide records. • Occasionally completes grounds work such as mowing, weeding, raking leaves and debris, edging, watering, fertilizing, and spraying herbicides and pesticides as needed. • Perform grounds repairs such as stairs, railings, fences, grounds maintenance and mowing, and pest control. • Maintain water meters, fertigator, and wet pad tank algaecide. Equipment Operations | 20% • Operate and/or direct others in the use of heavy equipment: Backhoe, forklift, dump truck, excavator, high-lift bucket truck, crane, payloader, and trencher, etc. • Operate and maintain power tools and equipment, such as electric and gas engine driven compressors, large mowers, snow removal machines, pneumatic tamper, chainsaws, pole-saws, jackhammer, portable pumps, weed eater, rototillers, lawn edger, fertilizer and seed spreaders. • Operate motorized equipment, such as automobiles, trucks, including dump trucks, forklifts, cranes, tractors, and front-end loaders, mowers, street cleaning equipment, backhoes and small dozers, manlifts and bucket trucks, and trailers and trenchers. • Provides snow and ice removal at building entrances, pressure washes
