Professional (+) (Fixed Term) Time Type: Full time Position Term: 12 Month Position Details: The Opportunity: The Journalist/News Fellow - Cascadia Daily News position is a two-year fixed term appointment serving as a civic news reporter in the Murrow News Fellowship Program. This position is for an emerging journalist to report on civic affairs in underserved communities. As the Journalist/News Fellow you serve as a reporter for the Bellingham-based http://www.cascadiadaily.com/ expanding coverage in rural areas of Whatcom and Skagit counties, including the Skagit Valley and west slopes of the Cascade Range, focusing on public services, local government, infrastructure, agriculture, flooding and climate change, water rights, immigration and border security. You will travel as needed, dependent on where the news is located - generally day trips, no overnights. You gather, write, and produce civic journalism of interest to assigned newsroom's audiences and news beats. As needed, you may turn a daily story on deadline, or produce in-depth reporting on economic, environmental, political and/or social issues facing residents in Whatcom and Skagit counties. Output could be in various formats, though primarily in writing for digital presentations and the weekly print newspaper. The assigned newsroom will provide editing, guidance, and professional support in collaboration with Murrow's Program Manager. The work location for the Journalist/News Fellow - Cascadia Daily News Fellow is Bellingham, WA. Required Qualifications: • Positions require a Bachelor's Degree in a field relevant to area of specialization. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the degree requirement. • Combination of relevant education and experience relevant to the beat and the role. • Strong news reporting skills to produce quality journalism. • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English. • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver's license and meet requirements in accordance with https://policies.wsu.edu/prf/index/manuals/safety-policies-procedures-manual/sppm-7-10/#four3 and departmental driving standards. Preferred Qualifications: • Degree from any accredited higher ed institution in Washington state with a major in journalism, broadcasting, communications, or closely related field. • Knowledge of Washington state community issues. • Experience or training in new technologies for the gathering and delivery of news. • Experience using social media and/or photography in a news environment. • Experience researching complex issues. • Experience with data reporting and public records. • Fluency in a foreign language.
