Professional (+) (Fixed Term) Time Type: Full time Position Term: 12 Month Position Details: Summary of Duties: The Journalist/News Fellow - Cascade Public Media/KNKX position is a two-year fixed term appointment serving as a civic news reporter in the Murrow News Fellowship Program. This position is for an emerging journalist to report on civic affairs in underserved communities. As the Journalist/News Fellow you serve as a multi-skilled reporter for http://www.cascadepublicmedia.org/ (formerly known as Crosscut), and http://www.knkx.org/, an NPR station with studios in Tacoma and Seattle. You partner on statewide politics and government reporting project focused on issues facing young adults in Washington and the power dynamics at play in elections and policy decisions that will affect the state's future. You may produce in various formats, including audio, video, text and digital presentations. You work independently and as a collaborator. The assigned newsroom will provide editing, guidance and professional support in collaboration with Murrow's Program Manager. The work location for the Journalist/News Fellow - Cascade Public Media is located in Seattle and KNKX is located in the Tacoma area. The journalist will be expected to report to broadcasting studios and attend in-person newsroom meetings when scheduled. You will travel as needed, dependent on where the news is located - generally day trips, no overnights. Required Qualifications: • Positions require a Bachelor's Degree in a field relevant to area of specialization. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the degree requirement • Combination of relevant education and experience relevant to the beat and the role. • Experience with audio and/or podcasting. • Strong news reporting skills to produce quality journalism. • Ability to create engaging stories that audiences will find unique. • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English. • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver's license and meet requirements in accordance with https://policies.wsu.edu/prf/index/manuals/safety-policies-procedures-manual/sppm-7-10/#four3 and departmental driving standards. Preferred Qualifications: • Degree from any accredited higher ed institution in Washington state with a major in journalism, broadcasting, communications, or closely related field. • Knowledge of Washington state community issues. • Experience or training in new technologies for the gathering and delivery of news. • Experience in producing video, for online or broadcast. • Experience using social media in a news environment. • Experience researching complex issues. • Experience with data reporting and public records. • Fluency in a foreign language.
