The Opportunity:

 

The School of Languages, Cultures, and Race (SLCR), within the College of Arts and Sciences at Washington State University (WSU) invites applications for an Assistant Professor, Career track (Scholarly Sub-track) or Assistant Professor, Career Track (Teaching Sub-track) faculty position in Pullman, WA, with a specialty in German. This position is a fixed-term, nine-month, two-year appointment with possibility of renewal. We seek applicants who will assist in program building and teach all levels of German language, culture, literature, and film. Area of specialization is open. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will begin the appointment on August 16, 2024.

Job duties for either sub-track:

 

• Literature, culture, and language history instruction in both German and English.

 

• Serving on school, college, and university committees and participating in the shared governance of SLCR.

 

• Participating in German program meetings and curriculum development.

 

• Program building, including outreach and recruitment to the language program and school.

 

Specific job duties for teaching sub-track:

 

• Teaching 4/4 in-person courses

 

• The workload of this position is 80% teaching and 20% service.

 

Specific job duties for scholarly sub-track:

 

• Teaching 3/3 in-person courses

 

• Conducting original research, which will be reflected in publications and/or scholarly conference presentations.

 

• The workload of this position is 60% teaching, 20% research and 20% service.

 

Required Qualifications for either sub-track:

 

• Native or near-native proficiency in German and English.

 

• Proven or potential for successful teaching and instruction.

 

• Demonstrated record of or potential for commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and access efforts.

 

Required Qualification for teaching sub-track:

 

• Completed Ph.D. or M.A. in German (or related field) prior to start of the appointment.

 

Required Qualification for scholarly sub-track:

 

• Completed Ph.D. in German (or related field) prior to start of the appointment.

 

• Demonstrated record of or potential for research and scholarship focused on German history, culture, literature, film, politics, or related scholarship.

 

Preferred Qualifications for either sub-track:

 

• Ability and willingness to assist with an established annual summer study abroad program.

 

• Ability to teach courses in world cultures, ethnic studies, or global issues.
