Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

$220,600.00 - $353,000.00

What Is the Opportunity?

The incumbent is responsible for managing the underwriting, growth and profitability of a specialized line of insurance or industry segment globally through the development and management of profit strategies consistent with Middle Market objectives. Incumbent is responsible for review and development of sound underwriting standards and the management of the underwriting process for the line or industry segment. Responsible for implementation of underwriting execution where specialization is critical, and to create distribution, profit and growth strategies for the line or industry in conjunction with Field leadership. Responsible for effective collaboration with field and Middle Market leadership team to achieve Business Insurance objectives.

What Will You Do?

Strategy and Business Results:

  • In partnership with field leadership develops strategic business plans and sets annual plan targets that optimize product integration and cross-sell

  • Works closely with international resources to establish and execute on international strategies

  • Track and monitor field execution for the line or industry; works with field leadership to establish and adjust execution strategies on an ongoing basis

  • Maintains appropriate specialization and awareness of industry trends by attending specialized trade forums, industry boards or bureaus – all efforts coordinated with business leadership

  • Jointly accountable with field leadership for the results of the line’s most complex, at risk or hard to close deals as needed.

  • Influences product strategy for designed line/industry segment.

Leading People:

  • Has an active and collaborative partnership with HR around recruiting plans and staff development to attract and retain top talent. Works closely with leaders on developing bench strength for all key positions.

  • Staff management functions include, but not limited to, coaching, training, planning and performance management in a supportive, team oriented, collaborative manner.

  • Shares talent management responsibilities with the BI FVP and other Enterprise leaders for the benefit of the organization.

  • Builds and maintains valued internal business partnerships within Business Insurance, the Enterprise, and external constituencies as appropriate.

Distribution Management:

  • May engage key distribution specialists directly on the line or industry on behalf of Travelers

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • 15+ years of Property & Casualty underwriting experience preferred.

  • Bachelor’s, MBA or Master’s degree preferred.

  • Comprehensive knowledge and mastery of business line strategy including underwriting, pricing, operations, finance and product development.

  • CPCU designation preferred.

  • Advanced level of technical and industry expertise on the line or industry.

  • Demonstrated track record of strong execution and ability to drive results.

  • Demonstrated ability to set broad strategic direction for a large or complex portion of the business.

  • Advanced ability to communicate, influence and negotiate, lead by example, and make complex decisions that impact all of Business Insurance.

  • Proven ability to lead enterprise level change and operate strategically in a complex, matrix organization structure.

  • Experience leading and developing people, and driving optimal results through diverse teams at varying levels.

What is a Must Have?

  • 12 years of underwriting experience required.

  • People leadership experience required.
