The Washington Geological Survey (WGS) is looking for an entry-level geoscientist with a passion for landslides to join the Survey's Landslide Hazard Program. This 18-month position (with the possibility of extension) is an opportunity to learn new skills, build your geology knowledge, and get familiar with the work of the Washington Geological Survey. The Landslide Hazard Program is an active and growing group within the Survey, with multiple ongoing efforts to map landslides, alluvial fans, and rockfall across Washington. You will contribute to the mission of the Program by using lidar terrain derivatives and orthoimagery to identify and map landslides in Clark County. Though the position is primarily office-based, to populate a landslide inventory database, there is also an opportunity for field reconnaissance to ground-truth the GIS work. Responsibilities:
- Use ArcGIS Pro to identify landslides from LiDAR and orthoimagery and digitize their extent.
- Develop a landslide inventory database for Clark County.
- Spend time in the field ground-truthing landslide mapping completed in the office.
- Work well as part of a team to complete project objectives.
Required Qualifications:
- A Bachelor of Science degree or higher in an earth science field; *AND *three years of professional experience in geology assessing and identifying landslide hazards from remote, sensing, and field assessments; *OR *an equivalent combination of education and/or experience in a related field.
- Experience in collecting, compiling, managing, and digitizing geospatial and tabular data in the interpretation of lidar and aerial imagery.
- Proficiency in GIS, demonstrated by experience and (or) coursework.
- Proficiency in completing field investigations in a variety of topographic and environmental settings including rugged, uneven terrain.
- Proficiency with public speaking, demonstrated by experience and (or) coursework
