This position is responsible for supporting the execution of core processes central to the mission of the Nelnet privacy program. This role reports directly to the Senior Privacy Counsel and is responsible for providing critical support to the privacy program by conducting ongoing research and undertaking privacy-related projects, conducting assessments, developing and maintaining program components, monitoring and reporting metrics, and collaborating with others across the organization to ensure adequate safeguarding of personal information.


• Support the Senior Privacy Counsel in building and managing a data privacy program including developing & maintaining internal privacy governance, creating policies and training and awareness events, advising business partners and service providers regarding privacy requirements and best practices, and monitoring and reporting on practices to ensure the business and its functions comply with the applicable requirements and achieve best practices.

• Liaise with Data Governance, Cybersecurity, and Information Technology teams in support of data governance, data retention rules documentation, data mapping and data flow diagramming, including communicating with and providing guidance to stakeholders.

• Support day-to-day activities such as assisting with requests from internal stakeholders, responding to privacy requests from clients, candidates, and employees relating to privacy laws.

• Manage data subject access requests (DSARs), perform initial assessment of requests, liaise with system and business owners, and communicate with data subjects as needed; work closely with other stakeholders to continuously improve and automate the DSAR process.

• Assist in contract review process in support of the privacy program.

• Support the development, maintenance and revision of internal policies and procedures for the general operation of the privacy program and related activities

• Analyze, prepare, and monitor metrics related to assess the performance of the privacy program including creating new metrics & reporting around privacy compliance/risk reporting and KPIs.

• Maintain and update applicable data breach notification regulations and related internal documentation

• Support the review of privacy policies and notices, and other internal- and external- facing disclosures, contractual templates, privacy FAQs and related resources.

• Create and maintain data privacy records as needed and assist with compliance testing/audits related to data privacy and the privacy program.


• Bachelor's degree

• 3+ years of experience in data privacy (CCPA, GDPR etc.) or related legal regulatory compliance experience in a large enterprise.

• Strong research skills

• Strong verbal and written communication skills, able to communicate tactfully and effectively, and express technical concepts in business terms

• Excellent planning, project management & organizational skills, time management, and analytical skills.

• Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines and priorities


• Privacy Certification (Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP)

• Experience with Compliance Management Systems, Privacy Software, Jira etc.
