Summary:

The Commissioning Engineer – BESS is responsible for directing and managing activities required for commissioning/start-up and warranty requirements for the utility battery energy storage system (BESS) facilities.

Requirements:

  • Provides input for integrated test schedules to support utility scale battery energy storage projects.

  • Manages the activities related to drafting and implementing project-specific commissioning plans and coordinates pre-commissioning activities & handover process (including factory acceptance tests).

  • Works with discipline engineers to coordinate interconnection requirements with utilities.

  • Manages documentation and coordination requirements during and post-construction.

  • Manages and organizes the site commissioning manager's tasks, deliverables, and activities.

  • Manages and oversees the site commissioning personnel or 3rd party suppliers, ensures construction testing and QA documentation is available and assembled into the turn-over document books for the commissioning stage.

  • Leads onsite plant commissioning and performance testing.

  • Leads the field of Electrical, Mechanical, Instrument/Controls, SCADA Commissioning Specialists, and Vendor representatives in the scheduling, supervision, and performance of all Commissioning, testing activities, and documentation.

  • Manages site commissioning personnel in the establishment of the Safety Tagging, Lockout & Work Permit Program and ensuring compliance with its provisions.

  • Interfaces with the Owner’s Operations Department to schedule O&M training.

  • Supervises site turnover and O&M documentation for a client or an operation entity.

  • Supervises Warranty requests for completed project sites.

  • Works with the Construction Manager or his designee to jointly develop the Punch List before the system/equipment is released for Commissioning.

  • Possesses verbal and written communication skills with the ability to learn and effectively share information within a team environment.

  • Displays proficiency in using Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Word, and Excel for effective communication, scheduling, data management, and collaboration within a team environment.

  • Attends and completes required safety training and complies with safety rules and regulations.

  • Attends work regularly and punctually, and attends meetings as scheduled or expected.

  • Complies with Employee Handbook, Code of Conduct, and Company Policies & Procedures.

  • Presents, supports, and leads-by-example with a safety and quality-oriented attitude.

  • Follows safety and security procedures and determines appropriate action. Reports potentially unsafe conditions and uses materials and equipment properly.

  • Operates Company vehicle to oversee site operations.

  • Understands and implements safety requirements as outlined by NFPA 70E.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or chemical engineering or 7+ years of real-world experience in commissioning utility scale BESS required.

  • OSHA10 or higher required.

  • 2+ Years experience managing electrical utility scale commissioning personnel and activities required.

  • 5+ years electrical field experience within electrical construction projects required, BESS preferred.

  • Valid Driver’s License Required.

  • Ability to travel domestic and internationally 51-75% of the time required.

  • NFPA70E certification preferred.

  • Project Management training or certification preferred.

  • Utility-scale in battery energy storage facility testing for EPC or Utilities in the United States.

  • Intermediate level of knowledge in underground and overhead distribution design; transmission systems and design; single and three-phase electrical design.

  • D.C. systems architecture and testing.

  • Field Construction, Commissioning, and start-up experience preferred.

  • National Fire Protection Association/National Electrical Code (NFPA/NEC) standards, NESC, NFPA 70E, and IEEE/IES/API Standards.

  • NETA and IEEE standards as related to utility-scale battery energy storage facilities. EMS systems, BMS systems, Inverters, Medium Voltage Transformers, MV and LV cabling, grounding, and BESS-specific component testing.

  • Organization, planning, decision-making, problem analyses, and leadership.

  • The commercial performance of power plants.

  • Understand and implement safety requirements as outlined by NFPA 70E.

  • Outage planning and coordination review and oversight as outlined in NFPA 70E.

  • Ability to work extended hours and travel at short notice.

  • Familiarity with NERC guidelines and various ISO and TSO organization requirements is preferred.

  • Familiarity with DCS / SCADA control systems and methods for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems.

  • Familiarity with testing of mechanical and solid-state relaying systems is a plus.

  • Ability to interpret and integrate contract documents.

  • Ability to assist in the development and interpretation of project schedules.

  • Ability to communicate both internally and externally with both personnel and clients.

  • Ability to work extended hours and travel at short notice.

  • Ability to obtain a valid, current passport to travel outside the U.S.

  • Functional competencies include attention to detail, communication, excellence, system thinking, and business acumen.

Anticipated base salary range: $102,000 - $120,000

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. This position is bonus eligible.
