King County Washington Scale Operator (Regular Part-Time) in Multiple locations in King County, Washington

Summary

The Solid Waste Division of King County Natural Resources and Parks is recruiting for Scale Operators at their Transfer Station Operation Facilities. We are looking for individuals to utilize their customer service skills to assist with cashiering transactions, ordinance compliance and adherence to established procedures for special waste disposal.

Regular part-time positions are not guaranteed any certain number of work hours per week and weekly hours vary. This recruitment will be used to fill a current vacant position and may be used to create a list of competitive candidates to fill possible future vacancies in a regular or temporary capacity.

WORK LOCATION: * Various Solid Waste Transfer Stations located throughout King County. You can view a list of the stations at: https://www.kingcounty.gov/depts/dnrp/solid-waste/facilities/transfer.aspx. *Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements. * *

WORK SCHEDULE: Regular Part-Time Scale Operators are primarily assigned to a 7/10 work schedule (7 days on, up to 10 hours per day, followed by 7 days off (Tuesday - Monday) but may be assigned to a 5/8 schedule as needed. Regular part-time positions are not guaranteed any certain number of work hours per week and weekly hours vary. These positions are scheduled to work as needed to supplement full-time schedules. Winter months are slower and hours more limited, possibly only working weekend shifts. Summer months are busy, often yielding consistent full time and overtime work. Work hours are variable including Day, Swing, and Graveyard shifts. The Solid Waste Division is only closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. In this position, you are considered an essential employee and will be expected to work during weather, health and other emergency events. This position is overtime eligible.

*OPERATIONS SECTION PROFILE: * The operations section of the Solid Waste Division operates a solid waste transfer and disposal system for residents and businesses in King County (except for Milton and Seattle). The operations section is responsible for the transfer facilities, transportation, maintenance shop (maintaining the division's heavy equipment, vehicles and facilities), landfill operations, landfill gas and wastewater. Commercial garbage collection companies and self-haulers (business and residential) bring solid waste to the transfer facilities, where it is located into large transfer trailers and hauled to the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill for disposal. At the landfill, a network of environmental controls ensures the by-products of the decomposing waste are captured and managed.

EXAMPLES OF JOB DUTIES:

  • Assess, collect fees and account for all transactions from customers using the computerized automated cashiering and scale systems.

  • Account for all daily receipts, keep records of special accounts and permits in the transactions of the day.

  • Process charges for credit accounts.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent, consistent customer service to commercial drivers, self-haulers and individual members of the public, some of whom may not understand or be in compliance with King County Solid Waste rules and regulations.

  • Inform customers of the rules, regulations and use of King County Solid Waste facilities, and methods and locations of disposal available to them.

  • Ensure customer compliance with ordinances regarding type of solid waste disposal.

  • Educate customers on, and in some cases assess fees relating to, Washington State unsecured load laws.

  • Follow established procedures for special waste disposal.

  • Secure facility and remain until all transactions and end-of-day procedures are complete.

  • Opens and closes at the appointed times.

  • Accepts and verified change fund delivered by armored car carrier. Places deposits in drop safe.

  • Use alternative operating procedures in the event of systems failures, which may include using a calculator or hand written receipts during potentially challenging times.

  • Responds to emergency situations utilizing various communications tools.

  • Quickly and professionally handling emergency situations in a fast past work environment.

  • Maintains inventory and order supplies as required.

  • Maintain various records for transactions.

  • Problem solving and troubleshooting. Work both as part of a team and independently.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Minimum three (3) years recent experience of basic cashiering, accounting and cash handling skills.

  • Minimum three *(3) *years experience communicating with a diverse range of staff and customers in a pleasant, non-judgmental, respectful, and culturally sensitive manner.

  • Demonstrated skills in cash register point of sale (POS) fundamentals; opening closing tills, monetary transactions including counting coins, processing checks and credit cards.

  • Excellent customer service skills dealing with the public.

  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with a diverse range of staff and customers in a pleasant, non-judgmental, respectful, and culturally sensitive manner.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member to complete assignments.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Washington State Driver's License or the ability to travel in a timely manner to other transfer stations during the course of the work day/shift.

  • Requires the ability to work in an industrial site setting with adverse conditions such as dust, odor, high volume noise and heavy traffic.
