Farmworkers/Laborers (blueberry)

THINNING: Thinning is a manual process used to control the size and quality of grown fruit. Must possess ability to pick up, handle a 10-foot orchard ladder weighing 40 pounds. Thinning may also be done from the ground or a motorized platform. This process requires the employee to remove, in some cases but not limited to the smallest fruit bud and/or identifiable fruit from within a cluster of other fruits. Workers will be expected to be able to identify and remove fruit that is misshapen, damaged and/or with other quality problems as directed by supervisors.

Pruning: The worker will hand prune trees and on a motorized platform, from the ground and/ or utilizing a ladder. The worker will utilize hand shears, hand loppers, handsaws and/or other equipment.

 

 

The worker may be required to selectively prune trees of certain size and color as instructed by their supervisor. The worker will identify and remove stubs, broken branches, downward growing branches, branches which rub against them each other, shaded interior branches, dead wood, shoots and suckers with various equipment. Equipment may include chain saws, poles saws or other power tools as needed.

 

Blueberry Harvest:

The worker will perform manual labor on a mechanical blueberry harvester hoeing and pulling weeds. Workers must handle and sort berries on

the machine. Grade, sort, or classify berries by size, weight, color, or condition. THIS JOB DOES NOT INCLUDE HAND- HARVESTING

BLUEBERRIES. The worker will perform routine maintenance checks of the blueberry harvester machine at the beginning of the shift and throughout the day to ensure they are functioning properly. The worker be driving and running the blueberry harvester machine through the blueberry furrows. Once the blueberry harvester machine is loaded with trays, the worker will run a frontend loader and will take the trays with

blueberries off the blueberry harvester machine and will place them on to semi-trailers.

Additionally, the workers will be responsible for washing the blueberry harvesting machine daily at the end of every shift using a power washer and chlorine to disinfect. The worker is also responsible for handling the fruit (blueberries) trays. They will ensure that the empty trays are being filled onto the blueberry harvester machine. Once the trays are full, they will grab them and stack them up on pallets.

Other Tasks and Job Specifications Include:

  1. Provide general labor to assist in the establishment of new orchard or field properties by clearing property, planting trees, building trellis, repair and any other labor

considered necessary to construct an efficient infrastructure for orchard properties.

  1. Irrigation System Installation -- distribute materials in the field, assemble pipe, fittings, valves and other parts per supervisor's directives, attach poly tubing to trellis

wire; likely to include variable amounts of shovel work to dig, enlarge or deepen pipe ditches.

3.Trellis System Construction --distribute wood trellis posts in the field, shovel work to enlarge or deepen post holes, position posts in holes, fill and tamp soil around

posts, unroll wire into the field and nail to posts, install anchors and build anchor assemblies to connect end posts to anchors.
