This position is responsible for the coordination of two unique Mercer Island Youth and Family Services programs, the Volunteer Outreach in Communities Everywhere / Summer Volunteer Program (VOICE/SVP) program and the Healthy Youth Initiative (HYI). As the VOICE/SVP coordinator, this position is responsible for the coordination and implementation of structured, summer time volunteer, leadership and development opportunities for Mercer Island youth involved in the VOICE/SVP Youth Development programs. The position oversees VOICE/ SVP summer program (seasonal) staff and interns. As the HYI Coordinator, this position is responsible for providing support staffing to the HYI community coalitions and action teams, currently focused on the following topic areas: Youth Substance Abuse Prevention, Mental Health Promotion, Early Childhood Social and Emotional Learning and Parenting. This position will facilitate the coordination and implementation of the projects directly and/or in conjunction or consultation with the YFS Programs Manager(s), other staff and volunteers. During the summer this is a variable hour per week position with considerable evening and weekend on-call hours. The majority of hours during the school year are spent on-site at YFS. This is 0.8 FTE.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Youth Development Coordinator
Coordinates the Volunteer Outreach In Communities Everywhere (VOICE) summer youth volunteer program for high school and middle school-aged youth.
Researches, develops and implements schedule of volunteer activities and leadership development opportunities to support VOICE programming.
Coordinates web-based volunteer scheduling calendar.
Recruits, orients, trains and oversees seasonal (summer) staff, support staff and volunteers involved with VOICE and volunteer projects.
Leads youth leadership development groups and activities.
Manages and monitors expenditures for VOICE/SVP and other volunteer projects and activities to remain within approved budget.
Community Prevention Coordinator
Provide support staff to the Mercer Island Healthy Youth Initiative
Facilitate the coordination and implementation of Coalition-designed Action and Strategic Plans for the coalition as a whole and individual Action Teams, directly and/or in conjunction or consultation with HYI Action Team(s) members, Coalition partners and/or other staff and volunteers.
Speak in public venues as a representative of HYI.
Coordinate community training sessions and Coalition public events such as Town Hall Meetings.
Must have regular and predictable work attendance to fulfill the essential functions of the job.
Complete monthly reports, outcome measures and other required paperwork.
Participates as an effective team member of the Department of Youth & Family Services.
Perform other duties as assigned.
This position is supervised by the Community Development and Administration Program Manager. The Coordinator works independently, exercising discretion and judgment in setting priorities while maintaining coordination with their supervisor.
Degree in human services, social sciences, social work, education or related field.
Minimum of two years of experience working with youth in a professional capacity.
Minimum one-year experience supervising staff/volunteers.
Working knowledge of alcohol and drug prevention; experience with environmental prevention strategies preferred.
Successful experience in project coordination and human services project management.
Demonstrated skills in oral and written communication in the English language, interpersonal relations, teamwork, and basic computer skills.
Demonstrated record of independent work, problem solving, program documentation, organizational and time management skills
Ability to be flexible and work independently. Ability to work effectively with City staff, volunteer organizations, community groups and individuals.
Demonstrated cultural humility and excellent inter-personal communications skills. Ability to multi-task, prioritize and work under pressure.
All YFS staff is required to maintain strict confidentiality and professional/ethical standards required by State and Federal statutes and by Youth & Family Services policy.
Completion of a criminal history background check is required in order to determine any past conviction history of crimes against persons, sexual assault or exploitation, and sexual or physical abuse.
Attendance at evening and weekend activities is required when necessary to fulfill job functions.
Ability to drive a City vehicle, possess a current and valid Washington State driver's license and good driving record.
Certified Prevention Professional (CPP)
Experience or knowledge of social marketing and social norms marketing
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES
Work is performed in an office setting at the YFS administrative offices, on-site at volunteer projects and in community-based settings, which may be indoor or outdoor and take place throughout the year. Some travel to off-site locations may be required. The coordinator must be able to drive vans or other multi-passenger vehicles. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job. Hand-eye coordination and fine-manipulation skills are necessary to operate computers and office machinery. This position also requires the ability to lift 50 pounds.
