Summary

Career seasonal positions are subject to release and recall procedures. Career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. Selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment.

Mount Rainer's typical season for this position is January 1st thru September 30th or March 1st thru November 30th.

This Climbing Ranger position requires the mastery of a broad array of special technical skills as well as leadership attributes in high-risk operations, with less than weekly oversight provided by supervisors. Incumbents are expected to enter on duty with a professional level of climbing and winter mountaineering background and experience, and are expected to pursue, develop, achieve, and maintain industry standard level certifications in mountaineering that may take as many as five years to achieve. These include; 1)AMGA Alpine and Ski Guide, 2) National Registry EMT-B or greater certification and, 3) a Helicopter Crew Member (HECM) certification, 4) a US Level 2 avalanche certification, 5) a Technical Rope Rescue Leader (TRTL) certification , and 6) a proficiency as a helicopter short-haul spotter. Past leadership in search and rescues, and significant experience with the incident command system is required. These certifications and proficiencies are at the minimum level needed for a leadership role within the climbing operation. Practicing each of these skills once every 1-3 months is expected to compose between 25 and 50% of total time.

  • You will be required to wear a uniform(s) and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided..
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 8 nights in the backcountry at a time. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You will be required to possess a current Emergency Medical Technician-Basic/First Responder certification.
Qualifications

SELECTIVE FACTORS:

This position performs mountaineering experience and requires applicant to have at least 20 professional ascents of routes on peaks greater than 14,000 feet where the route is typified by overwhelming glaciated terrain OR have an 'Alpine Guide' certification from an affiliate member of the IFMGA (International Federation of Mountain Guide Associations).* Please list the individual professional climbs in your climbing resume specifying the date, mountain, route, rating, and employer for each climb. Applicants must document how they meet this requirement. Be sure to include a list on your resume the 20 professional US Alpine Grade II-IV climbs above 14,000 feet that you have accomplished*. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position.

- AND -

This position requires selectee to have a current State or National Registry EMT-Basic or higher certification at the time of entry on duty.

-AND-

The duties of this position require the person selected to possess an interagency (Department of the Interior / US Forest Service) Helicopter Crewmember (HECM) NWCG certification.

-AND-

To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: serving as a park ranger patrolling major mountain climbing routes, performing emergency medical services, and managing search and rescue activities or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked.

  • OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least a Masters or equivalent degree OR 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree from an accredited educational institution, that is directly related to the work of the position, and which demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to do the work of this position. Directly related fields include natural resources management, park and recreation management, or other closely related subjects directly pertinent to the management and protection of natural and/or cultural resources. You must include transcripts.

  • OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, for example, 6 months of the specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement), and 27 semester hours or 41 quarter hours of directly-related graduate level college study in an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education). You must include transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institutionwith your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Physical Demands:The work requires regularly climbing on steep, even vertical, snow and icy surfaces (snowfields and glaciers) from sea level to the summit on Mountain Rainier (14,500 feet) is often exhausting. Activities require: carrying heavy (50 lbs) backpacks, lifting and carrying heavy (50 lb) objects, walking and/or hiking and/or backcountry ski distances up to 15 miles per day, and working at night. Due to the nature of mountaineering, work can occur any time during the day, and emergencies can arise that require the employee to work through the night in an "initial attack" capacity. Employee must maintain a high level of year-round physical fitness and exercise in extreme environments every week - all year.

Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside. Weather conditions may include sub-freezing temperatures, severe winds with gusts as high as 100 mph, freezing rain and fog, snow, and intense sun and heat from solar radiation. High camps are situated at approximately 10,000 feet, and field activities will climb to altitudes of approximately 14,500 feet, and possible camp at that altitude. Terrain at work sties may include glaciers, crevasses, steep to vertical snow slopes, steep to overhanging ice cliffs, talus slopes, and vertical rock. Work conditions will require close occupancy with other rangers in the field for up to eight days in a row. Food and water will be packed to remote locations and cooking done communally with other employees. For longer trips, employees may need to melt snow and ice for water. Many nights during an eight day shift will be spent on the mountain camping in a tent, sleeping bag, and using foam pads for mattress.
