PIERCE COLLEGE IS SEEKING TO HIRE TWO (2) BASIC NEEDS NAVIGATORS

ONE POSITION WILL BE HOUSED ON THE PUYALLUP CAMPUS. ONE POSITION WILL BE HOUSED ON THE FORT STEILACOOM CAMPUS.

The Basic Needs Navigator will engage in culturally sustaining case management and student care practices that center racial and identity equity to remove barriers and empower students to successfully navigate their Pierce College experience, particularly regarding accessing essential needs-related benefits and all forms of student financial support. The Basic Needs Navigator is dedicated to supporting students in accessing benefits related to food/housing insecurity, homelessness, and other basic needs programs and services. This includes relational engagement to eliminate inequities and to advance student belongingness, self-efficacy and agency, persistence, degree completion, and transfer/employment readiness. The Basic Needs Navigator partners across the district and collaborates with external stakeholders to improve normalizing help-seeking for students. This position reports to the Director of Basic Needs and requires regular and consistent attendance. 

The Basic Needs Navigator will be responsible for the following, but not limited to:

Case Management:

  • Provide culturally responsive and personalized case management services to advance the success of marginalized students.  
  • Assist with implementing the Basic Needs Strategic Plan, partnering with Offices of Student Life, Student Government, and volunteers to operate a low-barrier food pantry to work towards a hunger-free campus. 
  • Build and maintain a working knowledge of community resources and nurture relationships with stakeholders who align with Pierce College's mission, vision, and values.
  • Build and a maintain a working knowledge of policies and legislation that impact students and their access to basic needs. 
  • Build and maintain working knowledge of internal resources and coach students through program funding options and processes. 
  • Plan, evaluate, and consult with staff and outside entities to identify opportunities for equitable service intervention, explore solutions and alternatives, and use trauma-informed approaches that meet each student's goals and needs.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of interactions with students and services provided using institutionally supported technology.
  • Engage in continuous self-led learning to recognize bias towards marginalized students.  
  • Monitor the progress of caseload outcomes by analyzing progress reports and metrics.

Assessment:

Complete acuity assessments for caseload to identify strengths and challenges in academic, career, and personal pathway by identifying factors impacting academic progress.

Assess and refer eligible students for emergency grants. This includes outreach to engage students in requesting assistance, completing program intake, and follow up.

Assist with preparation of complex comprehensive plans, summaries, recommendations, progress and special reports.

Analyze data from multiple sources to inform service delivery. Collaborate with team to identify trends in need, identify programmatic barriers, and provide recommendations for solutions based on survey and intake respons
