BASIC PURPOSE

The Recreation Aide III is responsible for assisting in the implementation of Summer Teen Programs. The Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide array of programs for teens including day trips, overnight camps, and Adventure Camps.

Day Trips:

Depending upon the teen's age and interests, they may choose from rock climbing, skateboarding, horseback riding, white water rafting, paint ball, laser tag -- the possibilities are endless.

Overnight Camps:

During the summer, several week-long overnight camping trips are offered.

Teen Adventure Camp:

This is a day camp operating Monday through Friday during the summer for approximately six weeks for teens ages 12 to 15 years old. The camp uses a local school as a base camp and then heads off for a new and exciting adventure each day. Activities include: swimming, hiking, water parks, paintball, horseback riding, kayaking, sports events, and much more! During the weeks of Teen Adventure Camp, teens will visit many different Northwest destinations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Recreation Aide III will assist with planning, developing, and coordinating the programs, as well as supervising program participants under the direction of the Program Coordinator and Recreation Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

  • Must have a High School diploma or G.E.D.

  • Valid Washington State Driver's License, the ability to drive a 15 passenger van safely (no special license required) and a driving record acceptable to the City and the City's insurance carrier.

  • Must pass a background investigation.

  • Must maintain a level of physical and mental fitness necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

  • Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be complete as required by the Immigration and Reform and Control Act.

  • Educational background in recreation, education, and/or child development.

  • Previous experience in conflict management/resolution, including parent/child relationships.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Must be able to work independently and as a team player.

  • One year previous experience in planning, programming, and supervising recreational and/or educational activities for children ages 12-15 in a school, camp, or recreational setting, or any combination of education and experiences which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the job.

  • Previous outdoor experience: camping, hiking, water sports, backpacking and/or other outdoor activities.

  • Valid First Aid and CPR certifications, or ability to obtain before the program begins.

  • Valid Food Handler's certification or ability to obtain before the program begins.

  • Knowledge of various sports, games, arts and crafts, and cooperative group activities.

Part-time positions that work less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for health insurance, other insurances, holidays, vacation, and/or other paid leave benefits provided to regular full-time positions; however, they are covered by Workers' Compensation Insurance. The City will comply with RCW 49.46.210 and WAC's 296-128-600 through 296-128-700 in providing paid sick leave to all covered employees (non-exempt).

Social Security and Federal withholding taxes will be deducted from wages.

*Please note, that Part-time and On-call positions, working less than than an average of 20 hours per week, are not eligible for membership in the Department of Retirement Systems.
