BASIC PURPOSE

The Instructor will teach cultural classes and/or workshops for youth and/or adults. Classes may include art, dance, theatre skills, crafting, cooking, etc. Classes are offered quarterly and are scheduled approximately three months in advance.

Classes/workshops are scheduled based on instructor and space availability prior to the schedule being published. Work week may be one to fifteen hours per week depending on the class being offered. Classes will be divided by age groups as required. Overall enrollment will determine the hours worked and could expand if program grows or reduced if enrollment lags.

The Parks and Recreation Department serves the community by providing health, inspiration, and recreation opportunities through quality programming, facilities, and community events. In addition, the department furthers the preservation and enhancement of the environment through planned parks, open spaces, and natural habitat areas.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops and implement sage-appropriate lesson plans that both engage and educate the participants.

  • Provides a safe environment for students.

  • Monitors progress and attendance of participants.

  • Follows department guidelines.

  • Represents the City and the department in a positive and effective manner.

  • Maintains effective communication with supervisor, participants, and parents.

  • Schedules hours and, if necessary, follows the appropriate substitution procedures.

  • For youth classes, supervises and directs participants and interacts with participants and parents.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a High School diploma or G.E.D.

  • Must be a minimum 18 years of age.

  • Must have experience with the topic/skill.

  • Must have teaching experience.

  • Must pass a background investigation.

  • Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be complete as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • For youth classes, knowledge of basic child development and abilities.

  • For adult classes, knowledge of adult learning techniques and lesson plans.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisor, parents, and participants.

  • Ability to create and execute a lesson plan for various age groups.

Temporary positions are not eligible for health insurance, other insurances, holidays, vacation, and/or other paid leave benefits provided to regular full-time positions; however, they are covered by Workers' Compensation Insurance. The City will comply with RCW 49.46.210 and WAC's 296-128-600 through 296-128-700 in providing paid sick leave to all covered employees (non-exempt).

Social Security and Federal withholding taxes will be deducted from wages.

Temporary positions are eligible for membership and will participate in the Department of Retirement Systems.
