Lowe's Sr R&D Engineer - 3D Spatial Computing in Kirkland, Washington
Your Impact
The Sr R&D Engineer will innovate across spatial computing projects, rapidly prototyping architectures, interface mechanisms, and software solutions using generative AI, large language models, structured data integration, and MLOps best practices.
This role blends software, hardware, and IoT technologies to create next-generation human-computer interactions in 3D environments.
By exploring domain-adapted LLM solutions, high-performance inference pipelines, and responsible AI techniques, the Sr R&D Engineer will deliver cutting-edge research prototypes to set new standards for immersive, intuitive, data-driven shopping experiences.
What you will do
Rapidly prototype and refine generative AI- and LLM-driven solutions for spatial computing projects.
Convert LLM outputs into structured, actionable data and integrate them into APIs and downstream systems.
Optimize inference pipelines for low-latency, high-throughput performance.
Implement MLOps, CI/CD, and container orchestration for efficient, scalable deployments.
Adapt LLMs to retail-specific contexts, ensuring responsible AI practices and compliance.
Collaborate with other engineers and researchers to prototype hardware and software solutions, experiments, and concepts.
Develop mechanisms, control algorithms, and models to build effective project plans.
Communicate and partner regularly with designers, producers, and artists to design automated features and improve their efficiency and quality of work.
Required Qualifications:
• 5 years of experience developing or working with mechatronic and/or 3D scanning devices, motion control, device design, control algorithms
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, robotics, computer engineering, or related field (or equivalent work experience in lieu of degree)
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred Educational Background: Master's/Bachelor's degree in computer science, robotics, machine learning, computational linguistics, computer engineering, or mechanical engineering or a equivalent work experience.
Relevant Experience: 5 years in ML/NLP with proficiency in transformers, attention mechanisms, and modern model architectures; and 2+ years working directly with large language models (e.g., GPT, LLaMA, PaLM) including model integration and fine-tuning.
Technical Skills: Strong communication skills, ability to work cross-functionally, experience with state-of-the-art techniques and PoCs, a track record of publishing or contributing to open-source projects, and experience with 3D environments, 3D math, and game engines (e.g., Unreal, NVIDIA Omniverse, RealityKit, Unity).
Team Collaboration and Documentation: Ability to clearly document technical solutions, work cross-functionally with product teams, data scientists, and ML engineers, and lead the feature richness of in-house application support infrastructure and APIs.

Pay Range: $163,800.00 - $311,200.00 annually
