The Seattle Times Assistant Pressroom Manager in Kent, Washington

We are seeking an Assistant Pressroom Manager to join our print operations team in Kent, WA! The Assistant Pressroom Manager is responsible for all production operations in Pressroom. This includes the quality of printed products, meeting production schedules, and the supervision of press crews. This person would also be responsible for the maintenance and cleanliness of presses along with the safety of press crews.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Trains general workers, assistants, and journeypersons in all applicable areas of press operation and printing in a positive and patient manner; additional training including company policies and procedures.

  • Maintains quality control functions for all presses in operation during the shift and oversees all personnel in an effort to maintain quality at all levels of production.

  • Helps keep all shift personnel to a minimum of idle/down time and have maintenance and housecleaning tasks prepared in the event thereof.

  • Assists in keeping the employee logbook updated, regarding tardiness, illnesses, or no call/no show occurrences.

  • Tracks inventory of supplies and consumables weekly, and fills out requisition requests, to be forwarded to the Pressroom Manager.

  • Demonstrates good work habits and promotes a positive attitude in an effort to make The Seattle Times a comfortable and desirable atmosphere in which to work.

  • Manage and maintain employee timecard information.

  • Reads all job work orders pertaining to assigned equipment and assigns crew members to specific jobs.

  • Oversees assigned printing equipment to achieve standards of quality, production (make-ready and run), and waste percentage.

  • Assists Pressroom Manager in reviews of crew members.

  • Directs crews in fully performing their assigned responsibilities.

  • Ensures that The Seattle Times “CONTROL COPY” color at required pull amounts is completed.

  • Ensures that accurate and complete job reporting paperwork is turned in by operators or leads.

  • Maintains a clean and orderly area at all times and instructs crews as to housekeeping and maintenance duties as needed.

  • Enforces and maintains Company safety rules and policies for press crew.

  • Instructs crews as to standard make ready, startup and run procedures.

  • Instructs crews in waste and production targets including make ready waste, run speeds, running waste.

  • Tracks and records all ink rollers, blankets and other print elements as to replacement, setting or resetting and condition to achieve a better maintained maintenance program.

  • Report to Production Support Department all major equipment problems. Record and document all minor maintenance tasks completed by crew.

     

    Schedule:  This is a 4, 10s schedule working approximately 3:00pm-1:00am. Shift days of the week may vary.

     

    Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED). 

  • Experience: Three to five years management experience along with web press operating experience.

  • Must demonstrate a proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

     

    Compensation: The full salary range for this position is $67,100 to $92,200. We typically pay between $67,100 and $83,900, depending on experience and qualifications.
