U.S. Army Sustainment Command Transportation Assistant (Claims Advisor) in Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington


About the Position: Work location for this position is US Army Sustainment Command, Personal Property Management Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA. This is a temporary appointment Not To Exceed (NTE) 12 months, but can be extended up to 3 years.


Process various applications for transportation or storage of a wide range of personal property and privately owned vehicles, including special items, of authorized civilian and military members.

Provide daily maintenance of stored lots and updates member?s temporary and non-temporary storage records.

Create detailed cost comparisons to determine the most economical method of movement, and screens orders for correct accounting data.

Route various information, such as personal property, estimate cost savings, time involved, time of arrival, storage in transit involved, and purposes to appropriate customer.

Brief customer and prepare custom documents for various overseas countries.

Review unsettle House Hold Goods (HHG) claims greater than 60 Government Business days from claim submission date and contact customer for status.

Assist customers with claims process to see if customer would like to transfer claims to Military Claims office.

Advise customer how to updated Defense Personnel Property System in regards to how to process claims and how to update in the Defense Personal Property System (DP3).

Contact Quality Assurance Section in regards to issuing Letter of Warning or Suspension for Transportation Provider missing deadlines.

Print Claims reports to determine unsettle claims past 60 days in accordance with Defense Transportation Regulation (DTR) Chapter 401 and 405.

Brief customers on how to process inconvenience claims with Transportation Service Provider when TSP fails to meet agreed upon dates.

Remind customers to complete Customers Satisfaction Surveys within seven days of each completed shipment delivery.

Assist Blue Bark Shipments customer or Next of Kin with claims processes.

Specialist Experience: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which include review reports of loss or damage, using automated systems, conduct data entry, retrieve information used to prepare regular reports, screen request forms for information. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. Direct deposit of pay is required. Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees. This is a Career Program (CP) 24 - Transportation and Distribution position. You may claim military spouse preference (MSP). Payment of Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs is not authorized, based on a determination that a PCS move is not in the Government interest. Position may be filled as a temporary promotion, reassignment, or change to lower grade NTE 1 year by a current permanent Army employee. Temporary promotions, reassignments, or change to lower grades may be extended up to a maximum of five years, and may be made permanent without further competition. Position may be filled as a temporary appointment NTE 1 year, if candidate is not a current permanent Army employee. Temporary appointments may be extended up to a maximum of three years. A permanent Army employee selected for a time-limited promotion, reassignment, or change to lower grade to fill a temporary position within the same command will be returned to the position from which he/she was temporarily promoted; or, with their consent, to a different position of equivalent grade and pay. The return is not subject to the procedures in parts 5 CFR 351, 5 CFR 432, 5 CFR 752, or 5 CFR 771. Pursuant to 5 CFR 335.102(f)(1), the employee must be given advance written notice of the conditions of the time limited promotion, reassignment, or change to lower grade. This notice will include the time limit of the promotion, reassignment, or change to lower grade, and the information that the employee may be returned at any time to the position from which he/she was temporarily promoted, reassigned or change to lower grade, or to a different position of equivalent grade or pay. The notice will also include the reason for the time limit, the requirement for competition for a temporary promotion beyond 120 days and the employee's return placement rights, as described above.
