U.S. Army Forces Command Safety and Occupational Health Specialist in Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington

Summary About the Position: Serves as principal Safety and Occupational Health Specialist at the Corps and Division level of an Army Command or equivalent. The program embraces a diversity of high risk factors to meet training and mission readiness requirements located on Joint Base Lewis McChord, WA. Responsibilities Participate in management responsibilities including formulation, development, organization, execution, and assessment of a comprehensive safety program. Provide technical safety advice and assistance to commanders, primary and special staff officers, tactical specialists, and other professional specialists on matters pertaining to military operations and activities. Evaluates all safety program initiatives, policies, standard operating procedures and processes. Collect, maintain, and analyze relevant safety data to support the Commander’s accident prevention goals. Provide technical assistance and guidance to major unit commanders, staff officers, and supervisors on all work relating to compliance and application of Army and OSHA Standards. Monitors work areas and evaluates activities with higher risk of injury or potentially hazardous conditions. Conduct assessments, analyzes severity of hazards, develops and implements control measures. Manages the safety awards program. Provide safety education and training opportunities. Develops lesson plans, support material, specialized safety courses, promotes safety campaign materials and ensures safety standards are published in appropriate training manuals. Monitors safety improvement programs to evaluate the effectiveness of training. Promote safety awareness information and literature by all methods of communication. Implement policy and procedures within the broad framework of Army and DOD goals and objectives, federal/state legislation/statutes. Develop safety standards, policies, and procedural guidelines for high-risk operations where no standards exist. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes determining and devising measures to control or eliminate environmental hazards and monitor risk assessments to improve environment and/or workplace safety; and experience conducting research studies of existing or potential safety and health problems and issues. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-11 or above. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Mishap/Accident Investigation Oral Communication Program Management Risk Management Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11). Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct deposit of pay is required. Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.
