About the Position: This position is with the U.S Army Sustainment Command, 404TH Army Field Support Brigade, Logistics Readiness Center, located in JBLM, WA. Responsibilities Operate diesel electric locomotives to transport various items throughout the installation. Inspect locomotives daily ensuring all components are functioning properly. Transmit instructions via two-way radio to ensure accurate movement of the train. Observe safety rules/regulations diligently to prevent injury to personnel or damage to property. Prepare daily reports on locomotive operations. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Locomotive Engineer (Motor Vehicle Operator) without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform the full range of Locomotive Engineer (MVO) duties which include operating and inspecting diesel electric locomotives, transmitting instructions via two-way radio, observing safety rules, and preparing daily operation reports. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Related to Mobile Equipment Operation) Ability to Operate Safely (Non-motor Vehicles) Operation of Motor Vehicles Reliability and Dependability Work Practices (Including Keeping Things Neat, Clean, and in Order) Physical Effort: The locomotive engineers must be able to climb up and down steep steps or ladders to board and leave the train. They continuously manipulate hand-operated controls while stretching, turning, and shifting position for best visibility. The locomotive engineers are also subject to physical strain from swaying motions and jarring movements, particularly when coupling cars and running on rough track. Working Conditions: The locomotive engineers work in a cab which is often hot or cold. They are sometimes exposed to bad weather, particularly when operating with an open cab window. They are exposed to unpleasant fuel exhaust fumes and to jarring, jolting, and swaying movements. The locomotive engineers are continuously exposed to loud noise from engine operation, train whistle, and horn. They are exposed to possible injuries from accidents. Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct deposit of pay is required. This is a Logistics Career Field position.
