A Police Servies Officer (PSO) is an armed, limited-commission officer position.  The primary duties of the PSO are correctional duties in the 30-bed Hoquiam City Jail.  PSOs also assist with records management, code enforcement and support the patrol division with other duties such as crime scene security, traffic control, and special events.

A Police Services Officer is an honest, motivated, and caring individual who wants to serve their community.  The ideal candidate is a positive team player committed to public service.  They must have the ability to work both independently and with a team of fellow officers and staff.

Applicants must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment and pass a Civil Service Examination, physical agility test, and background investigation- to include polygraph, psychological, and medical exams.  Veterans Preference is available to qualifying applicants.

There are two ways to apply for the PSO position.  You may apply and test through Public Safety Testing, or you may apply directly to the City of Hoquiam.  You may access the Employment Page of the City of Hoquiam's website, www.cityofhoquiam.com.{rel="nofollow"}

Lateral Police Services Officer candidates must have attended the Corrections Officer Academy (COA) conducted by the Washington Criminal Justice Training Commission (CJTC) or have completed a similar academy in another state or federal training which is recognized by the CJTC and are eligible to attend the Corrections Officer (Equivalency) Academy.

Employees of the Washington State Department of Corrections who completed CORE training prior to 2008 may also be eligible to qualify as lateral candidates.  Unfortunately, the CJTC does not recognize the CORE training after 2008.

The City of Hoquiam is offering a $6,000 hiring incentive for qualified lateral applicants who are hired for a PSO position.

The Hoquiam Police Department is an accredited law enforcement agency through the Washington Association of Sheriff's and Police Chief's.  Out of the 281 law enforcement agencies in this state, only 71 are professionally accredited.  Maintaining this accreditation ensures that the department is meeting the most current and professional law enforcement standards.

HPD has a staff of 29 full-time positions in four basic functions: patrol, administration, police services, and investigations.  We operate a 30-bed jail facility, staffed by our five full-time Police Services officers.  The department provides 24-hour law enforcement services to the residents of the City of Hoquiam.

The officers and staff of the Hoquiam Police Department, on average, handle over 15,000 law incidents yearly.  In 2024, the Hoquiam City Jail saw 849 inmate bookings and had 5,178 bed days for incarcerated inmates.
