YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties After School Outdoor Educator in Gig Harbor, Washington

The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties is seeking an *After School Outdoor Educator *to join our team for from February 2025 to June 2025.

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading non-profit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. 

As an After School Outdoor Educator, in the Beyond the Bell Program, you would be part of an inclusive and collaborative team working to provide quality programming to a diverse student population in the areas of natural science, outdoor skills, environmental stewardship and social awareness. Educators will typically work independently from 3:00-6:00 pm Monday-Thursday running after school programing at a local Tacoma Elementary School. Educators teach classes ranging from geology, ornithology, reptiles, sustainable systems, teambuilding, orienteering, and many more.

 

 

*Key Responsibilities: *

  • Help create a safe and educational environment that fosters curiosity and appreciation for the natural world.
  • Assist with curriculum enhancement and development focusing on afterschool progressive environmental education.
  • Conduct and assist with other off-site programs, including slide shows for schools, cabin leader trainings, and marketing opportunities such as staffing a booth at a fair, as needed.
  • You will provide mentorship, leadership, and instruction for students in Outdoor Environmental Education outreach programs.
  • You will help plan and deliver a program for students, providing each participant with the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially.

Are you a good fit?

  • Minimum age of 20 years.
  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, or the Natural Sciences (preferred).
  • A minimum of two years' experience in the field of outdoor and environmental education, and demonstrated ability to work with members and staff of all ages.
  • Positive attitude and previous experience with school aged children and diverse populations.
  • You are committed to valuing and promoting diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Knowledge of ecological concepts and camp activities
  • Current Driver's License, CPR, AED, First Aid, and Oxygen certifications. Lifeguard certification preferred.
  • Complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on first day. Complete other online and in-person training as required.
