The Millwright / Machinist is primarily responsible for the maintenance of rotating equipment in the refinery including troubleshooting, mechanical repair, replacement, alteration, and preventative maintenance. Rotating equipment assets include centrifugal pumps, Sundyne pumps, fans, gearboxes, turbines, seal systems, centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, injection pumps, etc. This position utilizes various hand tools, power tools, specialty tools, mobile equipment, specialty shop tools, lathes, mills, balancing machines, and personal protective equipment (PPE).

The work is split between outdoor work and shop work, both in an industrial environment. The employee must possess the fitness and ability to perform the tasks safely and responsibly under normal supervision. The tasks listed below are typical, but do not limit assignments.

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Demonstrating a commitment to safety and health excellence through strong personal engagement, recognizing and stopping unsafe behavior, recognizing and eliminating safety hazards, following safe practices and procedures, and striving for continuous improvement of safety in the refinery

  • Performing pump, compressor, turbine, gearboxes, and fan repairs and overhauls

  • Making repairs that alleviate problems and improve bad actors

  • Basic troubleshooting of pumps, turbines, compressors, gearboxes, API seal systems, and fans

  • Performing turbine trips and make adjustments on trip mechanisms

  • Ability to balance equipment using accepted tolerances

  • Assembling and disassembling equipment, while taking required measurements, and making judgement calls on repairs based on those readings

  • Ability to machine sleeves, bushings, and wear rings based on measurements from as found equipment or drawings

  • The use of manuals, drawings, and standards to repair equipment and make basic upgrades to improve equipment as overhauls occur in the shop

  • Taking field measurements of pump, base, and piping and making suggestions for improvements prior to re-install

  • Being a self-driven employee, with the ability to find information and solve problems independently, by offering solutions to difficult scenarios or making basic improvements on your own

  • Working effectively in teams or alone and in the field or the shop

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions

  • High School diploma or GED

  • Must have a valid driver’s license

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Must have a journey-level certification in millwright or machinist disciplines from either a registered apprenticeship program or NCCER training program

  • 5 years or more of direct experience performing work as millwright or machinist craft in an industrial environment

  • Willing and able to perform and comply with the following, with or without reasonable accommodation:

    • Travel up to 5% of the time

    • Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends and holidays

    • Be on call 24/7/365

    • Respond to refinery emergencies during off-hours

    • Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines

    • Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet in height

    • Transport articles up to 50 pounds

    • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases

    • Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat

    • Work in enclosed spaces such as tanks and silos

    • Work outside in harsh weather conditions

    • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)

    • Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10 or more years as a journey-level millwright or machinist working on rotating equipment in a refining or petrochemical industry

  • Experience working while in supplied air

  • Knowledge of basic shop mathematics, pump API tolerances, and API 697 Repair Standards

  • Ability to read and interpret manuals, procedures, mechanical drawings, P&IDs, as well as create isometric and plan view sketches

  • Ability to effectively communicate with others including collaborative interpersonal skills, providing clear explanations, constructive listening, understanding instructions, and asking questions as appropriate

  • Effective written communication skills pertaining to documenting inspection and repair information

  • Knowledge of SAP scheduling, and CAD applications

  • Proficient in MS Office

  • Strong and effective communication skills (written and verbal) in both individual and group settings

  • Knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM)

  • Knowledge of safe work practices

The Ferndale Refinery is located on Puget Sound in Ferndale, Washington, approximately 20 miles south of the U.S.-Canada border. Facilities include crude distillation, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation and hydrodesulfurization units. It processes a variety crude oils, including Alaskan North Slope, Canadian and other foreign and U.S. shale crudes, primarily delivered via marine vessel and pipeline. Within the refinery is a rail car crude oil receiving facility with a capacity of 30,000 BPD. This offloading facility, owned by Phillips 66 Partners, makes the receipt of additional crude by rail car possible. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include residual fuel oil, which is supplied to the northwest marine bunker fuel market. Most refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline and barge to major markets in the northwestern United States.

Compensation

Pay for this position is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Currently, the starting rate is $49.17 per hour with a 7.5% annual bonus target (VCIP). This is scheduled to increase to $50.65 per hour in February 2024 and $52.42 per hour in February 2025. This position is not eligible for relocation assistance.
