The Boeing Company Structural Design Engineer - Additive Manufacturing in Everett, Washington
The Boeing Company’s Additive Manufacturing Innovation Center is seeking Structural Engineers to join our team as Additive Manufacturing engineers. Additive Manufacturing Engineers are revolutionizing the design and manufacturing methods of aviation. They are responsible for design, analysis, and certification of all facets of the additive process with a focus on designing fly away parts on Boeing commercial airplanes.
As a member of this team, you will collaborate with engineers across Boeing to develop and advance additive manufacturing design methods and processes. This position offers a unique opportunity to help shape Boeing’s approach to Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology. Weighing against traditional manufacturing methods, you will always be looking forward at new methods, materials, tooling, or processes to push the boundaries of how additive manufacturing technology can be used on our airplanes.
Additive Manufacturing solutions allow for some innovative designs that reduce: weight, lead time, complexity as a design constraint, part counts, assembly and installation times, and tooling.
It will require that you research, explore and educate yourself and others on evolving technologies and processes which makes new innovations in manufacturing and/or product design possible.
We are looking for highly motivated, innovative, independent thinking and self-managing engineers to help understand these technologies and rapidly prepare them for design use.
Be an active contributor within a team of engineers who perform the design, development, and testing of all facets of the additive process.
Assess AM part candidates for material and equipment selection, manufacturability, design optimization, and how all those relate to a parts business case.
Generate optimized build files to produce high quality parts in minimum time with maximum consistency.
Work with other engineers to help refine the design of existing parts and optimize new parts to leverage additive technology
Work with Materials Engineers to investigate properties, geometric accuracy, and surface finish to develop optimal print parameters, heat treatments, and design allowables for existing and new alloys.
Ability to handle multiple competing projects simultaneously
Ability to analyze complex problems, develop innovative solutions, and deal with ambiguity and frequent changes in priorities is required

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
2 years Additive Manufacturing design experience
BS Degree in Mechanical, Aeronautical, or Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
Proficiency in CATIA V5, or similar 3D CAD software is required
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
Master’s degree in Mechanical, Aeronautical, or Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
Experience with additive machines, including parameter development and process control.
Experience with additive simulation software.
Experience with topology optimization software.
Hands-on experience with various additive and subtractive manufacturing and joining techniques for metals and polymers
Experience with composites, high volume manufacturing processes, material science, and/or biomimicry desirable.
Knowledge of relevant aerospace design and test specifications
Passion for advancing the commercial aviation industry.
Excellent communication skills and ability to succinctly present recommendation.
Able to work well in an integrated collaborative team environment
Highly self-motivated and able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
Typical Education/Experience: Bachelors Degree in Mechanical, Aeronautical, or Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited university. ABET is the required accreditation standard.
