The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for overseeing laboratory operations and managing laboratory staff. This position ensures quality control and regulatory compliance in accordance with CLIA standards. The Laboratory Supervisor also manages the scheduling and oversight of the processing department. This role requires solid leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, as well as a demonstrated understanding of laboratory regulations and procedures.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the daily operations of the laboratory, including scheduling and oversight of the processing department

  • Supervises and provides leadership to medical technologists, leads medical technologists, and processing staff, including hiring, training, and performance evaluation

  • Ensures that laboratory operations meet quality standards and regulatory requirements, including maintaining compliance with CLIA, CAP, and other accrediting agencies

  • Develops, implements, and maintains policies and procedures for laboratory operations, including quality control, quality assurance, and safety

  • Monitors and evaluates laboratory test systems to ensure accuracy and precision of test results and develops corrective action plans as needed

  • Coordinates and ensures participation in proficiency testing programs, including ordering and distributing samples, monitoring and evaluating results, and implementing corrective action plans as needed

  • Conducts competency assessments of laboratory personnel, including testing of new and current employees, to ensure they are performing their duties accurately and efficiently

  • Addresses and investigates safety event reports in a timely and appropriate manner and takes corrective action as needed

  • Collaborates with other departments, including physicians, nurses, and administration, to ensure timely and accurate test results and to provide consultation on laboratory testing and results interpretation

  • Maintains inventory and orders laboratory supplies, equipment, and reagents as needed

  • Maintains records and prepares reports related to laboratory operations, including quality control, proficiency testing, and instrument maintenance

  • Performs laboratory testing as needed, and provides technical expertise and troubleshooting as needed

  • Maintains knowledge of current laboratory practices, procedures, and technologies, and keeps up-to-date with changes in regulatory requirements and industry standards

  • Must follow written and oral instructions and complete routine tasks independently

  • Complete all compliance training, including but not limited to HIPAA/Privacy/Confidentiality/Non-Discrimination/Harassment/Integrity Statement and signed Agreements

  • Ensures confidentiality of patient information by following HIPAA guidelines and TEC policies

  • Attends training to meet job position requirements and as needed or mandated by TEC policies, Div. of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH), OSHA, L&I, and other state/federal regulations

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field

  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by a nationally recognized agency (e.g., ASCP, AMT, AAB)

  • 3+ years of experience as a Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist

  • In-depth knowledge of laboratory operations, including laboratory techniques, procedures, and equipment

  • Solid understanding of CLIA regulations and experience serving as a technical supervisor

  • Knowledge of quality control and quality assurance principles and procedures, including proficiency testing and instrument maintenance

  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications

  • Proven ability to work effectively in a fast-paced laboratory environment, handle multiple tasks and priorities, and meet deadlines

  • Proven ability to perform laboratory tests and procedures, including standing for extended periods of time and lifting up to 50 pounds

Preferred Qualification:

  • 1+ years of laboratory leadership

Washington Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $70,200 to $137,800 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
