The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Southeast Region. The Southeast Region Engineering workgroup is seeking a *Lead Heavy Equipment Operator *to join a team that maintains DNR road infrastructure, maintains and improves recreation sites, assists in timber sale implementation, and supports virtually every Region program from Agriculture to Natural Areas. The Lead Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the planning, and execution of a variety of maintenance and construction projects in the Alpine area of the Southeast region. This position is part of an engineering team that maintains approximately 50 or more miles of forest roads per year for the benefit of our State Lands operations and the public, while simultaneously having the opportunity to help work on a diverse array of projects from trailhead construction to installing structures to supporting wildfire suppression activities.

Responsibilities: *The typical duties include: *

  • Maintaining road infrastructure utilizing a variety of heavy equipment (typically dozer, grader, dump truck, tilt trailer, and excavator as needed) throughout the Alpine Area of Southeast Region in a variety of challenging conditions and terrain.
  • Leading the Alpine Heavy Equipment Crew including instructing and directing another employee, planning, scheduling, arrangement, and assignment of work, with a focus on prioritization and efficiency.
  • Performing preventative maintenance (in consultation with region mechanics) to heavy equipment.
  • Arranging for equipment rentals, including type and timing, as needed for projects.
  • Completing all appropriate paperwork pertaining to crew activities.
  • Overseeing and directing contractors as needed to support Region Engineering staff.  
  • Assisting other programs as needed, including but not limited to timber sale road maintenance and snow plowing; recreation site and recreational use roads maintenance and improvement; emergency road repairs to DNRs road infrastructure; special projects where heavy equipment operations are required; initial attack support for fire control, etc.

*Required Qualifications: *

Ability to operate a pickup-sized vehicle in a variety of weather conditions and terrain.

Ability to safely and efficiently operate heavy equipment such as CAT 143H grader, CAT D-5 dozer, excavator, vibratory roller, 10 cubic yard tandem axle diesel dump truck and 20-ton tilt bed trailer, backhoe w/ front end loader, 40-foot boom truck, power brush cutter and various hand tools needed for maintenance (welder, cutting torch, etc.).

Ability to perform minor adjustments to heavy equipment, troubleshoot, and identify needed repairs and maintenance.

Knowledge of state motor vehicle laws, including those pertaining to the use and transporting of heavy equipment.

Effective communication skills.

Knowledge of Washington State Forest Practice standards (rules, RMAP procedures, requirements), state laws, and department procedures.

Ability to work independently or as part of a team on assigned tasks
