Under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager, provides direct nursing service supervision on the unit ensuring comprehensive nursing services and quality patient care. Assists with day-to-day management of unit operations. Assists with oversight of clinical and resource utilization, patient throughput, quality assessment and improvement, patient/staff provider satisfaction, interpretation of policies and procedures, staff education and regulatory compliance. Participates in the selection and evaluation of staff as delegated by the Nurse Manager.

The caregiver must be sufficiently fluent in the English language to satisfactorily perform the essential functions of the position. The degree of fluency required will vary depending upon the nature of the position.

For direct patient care roles: Performs and maintains currency of essential competencies as required by specific area of hire and populations served.

  • Demonstrates responsibility for day-to-day unit activities:

  • Staffing and supervision.

  • Performance management, recognition, mentoring and coaching.

  • Improving quality and safety.

  • Customer service and service recovery.

  • Throughput (ED only: LWBS, LOS, sub-times, etc)

  • Effective leadership and communication with staff & physicians.

  • Assists in Managing Human Resources:

  • •Participates in the hiring of new employees.

  • •Ensure new hire evaluations are completed in a timely manner.

  • •Ensure annual evaluation are completed in a timely manner.

  • Conducts progressive discipline process, including coaching and counseling:

  • •Seeks assistance from Manager/HR as appropriate.

  • •Informs Manager of staff receiving documented (verbal/written) corrective action/counseling.

  • •Creates and delivers SBAR to Manager for staff at the level of written corrective action.

  • Assists in Managing operations:

  • •Collaborates with Director, Manager or CNS, as requested, to update and revise policies, procedures, protocols, processes, standards and job descriptions.

  • •Collaborates with the Manager and Director to meet regulatory and PRMCE requirements.

  • Demonstrates responsibility for department specific projects/duties:

  • Collaborates with Manager / Unit Supervisors to review and approve monthly and daily staff schedules.

  • Investigation and dispositions of unusual occurrences.

  • Customer complaints and initiates follow-up real time and as delegated by Manager.

  • Demonstrates above-average skill in conflict resolution, negotiation of solutions, communicates positive and constructive feedback within the department and at the hospital level.

  • Participates in coordination and implementation of staff and Charge RN meetings:

  • Collaborates with the Nurse Manager, CNS and Educator for meeting content.

  • Observes and assures clinical staff skills:

  • Provides coaching and follow-up as appropriate.

  • Engages the support of Clinical Educator to support staff to gain/maintain critical skills as appropriate.

  • Demonstrates knowledge and ability in utilizing routine and specialized computer programs.

  • Leads and supports unit level process improvement activities:

  • Improves unit based processes.

  • Improves patient care through collaboration with CNS & Educator to develop evidence-based nursing care processes.

  • Participates and promotes hospital wide process improvement projects that have impact on the department.

  • Serves as a resource for the staff and management improvement projects for issues related to process improvement.

  • Provides leadership:

  • Provides leadership for department level staff and customer satisfaction activities including: staff and patient rounding, discharge phone calls, staff recognition.

  • Functions as a role model for communication, mission integrity, and professional behavior in all areas of responsibility. Facilities teamwork and unit pride.

  • Demonstrates collaboration with the physicians to meet mutual goals. In the absence of the Nurse Manager, Director is the contact person for the Medical Director.

  • Participates as representative of the department on assigned hospital wide committees as requested by Manager or Director.

  • Displays a positive image of leadership:

  • •Demonstrates knowledge and skill to facilitate groups of diverse backgrounds and opinions.

  • •Displays, promotes and coaches professional behavioral standards.

  • •Demonstrates ability to receive feedback and modify behaviors accordingly.

  • •Maintains own certifications at same standards as required clinical staff.

  • Provides care appropriate to the patient population:

  • Assesses data relative to age of patient (chronological or cognitive).

  • Interprets data based on age-specific parameters.

  • Plans, modifies and delivers care based on age of patient.

  • Identifies and plans for special behaviors of the specific age groups.

  • Consider age-appropriate resources.

  • Develops or contributes to the individual plan of care relating to the developmental age and needs of the patient.

  • Adjusts care to the age-related needs of the patient.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) Or equivalent educ/experience

  • Upon hire: Washington Registered Nurse License

  • Upon hire: National Provider BLS - American Heart Association

  • 4 years surgery nursing experience within the past 5 years
