Nooksack Indian Tribe Cook in Deming, Washington
JOB SUMMARY:
To ensure the compliance of the performance standards in the preparation, storage, and clean-up of meals provided to/by Head Start. To prepare attractive USDA approved meals while keeping the kitchen and food service areas clean and sanitary according to Washington State OSPI, Indian Health Board and Nooksack Tribal Health codes; to maintain adequate food stocks, kitchen supplies, and program nutrition records.
MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Complete annual USDA-OSPI Food Program training to ensure knowledge and understanding of food program requirements.
- *Complete or assist with monthly menu planning in accordance with USDA-OSPI food program guidelines. *
- Maintain nutrition records as required, including monthly receipts for USDA-OSPI reimbursement
- Maintain a sign-in sheet for children and record the number of children served each day.
- Acquire headcount for Head Start Program attendance before each meal is prepared.
- Pre-clean and sanitize food preparation and serving areas, cooking utensils, and serving ware prior to any preparation of meals.
- *Adhere to PPE guidelines to ensure health and safety of program children and staff. *
- Maintain confidential allergy and dietary restriction information and prepare special meals as needed.
- Perform supply inventory and submit orders according to planned menu and seasonal availability.
- Follow food storage, rotation and refrigeration guidelines.
- Plan and prepare nutritious meals in quantities according to the menu and the number of participants to be served.
- Assist in planning and preparation of classroom Nutrition Activities.
- Clean and sanitize dishes (after each meal), utensils, tables, counters, and kitchen equipment. Clean and maintain the kitchen and dining area to health codes.
- Perform duties in a safe and sanitary manner. Maintain a safe and sanitary kitchen, which is centered in an area frequented by many children.
- Assist with supervision of children's cooking activities, ensure kitchen environment is sanitary and safe for children during supervised activities.
- Monitor the kitchen whenever hazardous equipment is in use. Knives and other hazardous utensils, cleansers and other hazardous supplies will be kept in a secured labeled location when not in use.
- Count each meal served, amount of food used in preparing meals and food not used. Date and label all stored foods. Discard outdated foods and log discarded items.

OTHER DUTIES:
Because of the Tribe's commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
- Help to integrate the kitchen into Head Start programs by participating in nutrition education activities.
- Maintain a cooperative working relationship with Head Start staff and parents.
Attend trainings and meetings as requested.
