The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Northeast Region. We are looking for an Engineering Aide to join our Engineering team! This seasonal full-time position will be based out of Colville, WA. This position's typical season starts April 1 and works through December 15 each year.  The Engineering Aide will assist our engineers in the survey and layout of forest road projects and public works contracts. This position will comply with assigned public works and heavy equipment projects. Working with equipment operators, engineers, and other state employees across diverse landscapes they will accomplish and track a wide variety of forest road maintenance projects, such as rocking roads, routine drainage maintenance, stream crossing structure installation, and road abandonment. This position manages the logistics of transportation for the heavy equipment operator and equipment to projects.   To be successful as an Engineering Aide in the Northeast Region, you will not only need a solid understanding of forest road maintenance, but also excellent verbal, writing, and listening skills to communicate and collaborate with all of the disciplines in the DNR team. Your experience, skills, and positive attitude will be essential in contributing to the success of our region's engineering program and the health and productivity of Washington's lands and waters to meet the needs of present and future generations.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist engineers in the survey and layout of forest road projects and public works contracts.
  • Assists engineers with project compliance of public works and heavy equipment projects.
  • Inspections of bridges, culverts, gates, cattleguards, and forest roads for needed maintenance or repairs.
  • Manages the logistics of transportation of the heavy equipment operator and equipment to projects.
  • Previewing job sites before entry, and delivering required materials to the site.
  • Maintains inventory of culverts, temporary bridges, pumps, chainsaws, and other equipment.
  • Ensures repairs are completed and the necessary documentation is completed.
  • Attends staff meetings, trainings, and safety meetings. Work safely, use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment, and report any safety concerns.
  • Completes required documents for payroll using Time & Activity Reports (TAR), record daily vehicle mileage or hours using the Metered Equipment Reporting form (MER), and fills out Initial Incident Reports (IIR) for vandalism, theft, dumping, accidents, etc.

*Required Qualifications: *

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Two years of experience working on forest road maintenance or road construction projects.

Experience in reading maps and finding sites from maps using a GPS.

Experience in the use of chainsaws.

Proficient in using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite.

Ability to drive unmarked and unsigned primitive roads.

Ability to track and monitor inventoried items.

Understanding of logging and construction equipment. Including capabilities and uses
