The optometric technician / scribe is responsible for ensuring a positive patient experience and practice production. This position will work in conjunction with the doctor and team to facilitate, support and maintain optimum patient care. The optometric technician / scribe is involved in direct patient contact and collection of clinical data necessary for the visual health and performance of the patient. Accuracy and attention to detail are very important. This position is responsible for collecting clinical data in the following areas: pretesting, case history, visual acuity, stereopsis and color vision, chairside assistance and scribing. This position works directly with the doctor, patients, optical, front staff. Essential Functions

  1. Opens exam rooms, ensuring that all the equipment and instruments are present and calibrated.
  2. Conducts preliminary diagnostic testing (pre-testing) including: visual fields, auto refraction, corneal topography and wavefront analysis, non-contact tonometry, retinal photography, retinal scanning and visually evoked potentials.
  3. Rooms patient, takes case history, performs visual acuity distance and near, stereopsis and color vision testing.
  4. Alerts doctor to any abnormal or unusual findings present during the pre-testing.
  5. Enters all clinical data collected into the electronic medical record in real time.
  6. Responsible for record management, verification that the required testing has been completed and documented, all meaningful use documentation, entering all patient related data relayed by the doctor, assistance in the examination process with ophthalmic drop installation; assisting in some procedures; participating in the discussion of the patients' case, pre-appointing the next visit or visits. Provide clinical summaries along with supporting educational materials.
