About the PositionThe College of the Environment (CENV) is one of seven colleges within Western Washington University. This position’s working title is IT Systems Manager for CENV. The position performs senior-level IT leadership, management, and support roles for CENV as well as provides expert level IT support and advising on highly specialized software and systems to several university departments and facilities outside of the college. It is the sole liaison representing CENV regarding university-wide computing standards, philosophies, policies and emerging technologies.

This IT management position supports and manages all server systems, instructional facilities including computer labs, classrooms and ITV/AV (video conferencing) rooms. In addition, the position is responsible for all software and hardware for CENV and its three departments and four institutes. The position is also a key member of the Spatial Institute, managing spatial servers and labs for GIS curricula and special projects. This role includes not only CENV faculty, staff, and students, but other university departments and outside entities we partner with and have contractual agreements.

Under administrative direction this position performs senior-level IT leadership, management, and support for CENV. This position manages all CENV IT resources in support of the college’s faculty, staff and student populations. Project management, and server and system administration are key components of the work performed. This position offers senior level IT support, analysis, best practices, and optimal solutions for a wide variety of technical issues and challenges facing college faculty, staff, and students.

The position uses its independent decision-making authority to act on behalf of the interests of CENV as it relates to IT operations, policies, standards, and procedures. Leadership responsibilities include Chair of the CENV Academic Technology Committee as well as a founding member of the WWU IT Distributive Leadership group and member of Windows Endpoint Management group.

The position supervises and trains work-study students, and interns.

The State HR classification for this position is IT System Admin - Journey.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, MIS, Computer Science or technology-related field or equivalent combination of work experience, certification or education.

  • At least four years of information technology experience requiring customer service, organization, prioritization, troubleshooting, confidentiality, timeliness, and working independently to successfully install, configure, maintain, and support Windows and Mac desktop operating systems and software. An advanced degree (e.g., master’s degree) in MIS, Computer Science, or technology-related field or advanced IT certifications may compensate for up to two years of work experience.

  • Problem-solving, troubleshooting, and organizational skills, including demonstrated history of successfully managing multiple projects and priorities.

  • Valid and current work experience in Project Management, IT Systems Management/Administration, Server Management, IT Technical Support, Lab & Classroom Management, ITV Management.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Windows, macOS, Microsoft Office and 365 applications, browsers, and help desk ticketing system.

  • Knowledge of and/or experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and diagnose issues through performance monitoring, interpreting event logs, and other troubleshooting tools.

  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience with basic network concepts including TCP/IP, DNS, LAN/WAN, DHCP, etc.

  • Demonstrated history of superior interpersonal, customer service, and conflict management skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and to support diversity and inclusion within the organization

  • Demonstrated history of superior communication skills, verbal and written, with diverse personalities, technical competency levels, and cultures.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage resources.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and to supervise and coach/mentor student employees.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in MIS, Computer Science, or related field.

  • Experience with various integrated networking systems.

  • Experience with working in, or with, an educational community.

  • Experience in, and knowledge of, Web-based technology, especially web-based academic applications.

  • Experience with Windows Servers.

  • Experience with HTML, CSS, Wordpress, and Drupal web platforms.

Salary $7,077 - $9,518/month depending on qualifications and experience
