About the Department

Since its founding in 1962, Western Washington University Honors has functioned as a small college within a larger university, incorporating the best aspects of both. The small, diverse classes promote thought-provoking discussions that will challenge perceptions and foster a strong sense of community within each Honors cohort. With an average class size under 18 students, Honors College students have great opportunities to interact with each other and their professors. Honors students come from all over the United States and abroad. They bring a wide range of perspectives, interests, and talents with them, which enhances the quality of everyone’s education.

Students can pursue any major, have access to academic, fellowship, and internship advising, and have the option to live in an Honors residential cluster. From captaining our national championship rowing and soccer teams to editing our newspaper to organizing our TedX event, Western Honors students are campus leaders.

The Honors curriculum is structured in a way that provides a graduated, ongoing experience for students as they engage in increasingly sophisticated work while moving through their Western degree. Students in Honors are eligible for HNRS courses and undertake extended Honors independent study projects in their major fields. Students who complete all the Honors requirements receive a minor in Honors Interdisciplinary Studies.

About the PositionUnder the supervision and direction of the Director of the Honors College, the Honors College Assistant Director of Recruiting, Admissions, and Community builds the WWU Honors community by overseeing recruitment and selection of prospective Honors students, particularly with outreach to underserved populations; supervises Honors Peer Mentors and the program; advises Honors clubs and assists with development and execution of student programs and events; advises and supports students and families with culturally appropriate and inclusive services; and facilitates referrals to university and community services and offices. This position must maintain confidentiality and be able to work harmoniously with students, staff, and faculty in a team-oriented environment.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Honors College Outreach, Recruitment, and Enrollment Management

  • Co-coordinate the Honors College admissions funnel and application review process through the CRM data base, Slate

  • With the guidance of the Honors College Director, build the WWU Honors community by executing recruitment and selection of prospective Honors students, particularly with outreach to underserved populations

  • Assist with all marketing and communication messaging to prospective Honors student and alumni

  • Provide consistent and accurate enrollment trends and data markers through statistical summaries

Program Planning

  • Coordinate and implement Honors College recruiting and yield events for prospective and newly enrolled students, including Experience Western Honors and Honors Prologue

  • Assist with Admissions Recruitment events providing representation for the Honors College, including Western Fall Preview Days, Discovery Days, Admitted Student Days, etc.

  • Represent the Honors College as a liaison with Western Washington University Admissions Office and New Student Services Family Outreach

  • Facilitate and strengthen relationships between the Honors College and external partners such as high schools, community and technical colleges, tribal colleges, community agencies, and nonprofit organizations

Honors College Community Building

  • Oversee HOPPS (Honors Outreach to Past and Prospective Students), the Honors student ambassador program that works closely with visiting students and Honors alumni

  • Co-Coordinating events and administrative support for the Honors College

  • Monitor peer mentor program activities in relation to established peer mentor program goals; within established program parameters, determine variance from program standards.

  • Partner with the Chief Diversity Officer, Office of Equity and other ADEI committees to advance the mission of the university

  • Engage in developing and administering Honors College ADEI framework and ensure alignment with the University ADEI framework

  • Attend Honors club meetings as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Experience in college recruitment and admissions

  • Demonstrated leadership supporting diversity and multiculturalism and sensitivity to changing academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of applicants

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and effective written and oral communication skills

  • Proficiency with the MS Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, and Excel

  • Willingness to upgrade computer skills as necessary and demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to new technology

  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to serve a diverse student, staff, and faculty community and to cultivate working and learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of employees and students with diverse social identities and backgrounds.

Salary

Hiring range for year round position is $64,746 - $78,182/year. Through longevity position tops out at $84,170/year. This is a permanent, full-time, 10-month position; the hiring range is $53,955 - $65,151/year. Through longevity position tops out at $70,141/year.
