Starting salary rate is at Step 1 ($16.38/hr). The current full salary range for this position is $16.38/hr - $19.98/hr.

There is currently one (1) full- time vacancy. Full time and part time regular positions include Health Benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision), Retirement Benefits (through Department of Retirement Systems) and Paid Leave (Holiday, Vacation, Sick).

Public Works also anticipates using this recruitment to fill two (2) temporary positions with the City of Bellingham. Temporary employees are allowed to work full time up to six (6) months. These positions are not eligible for benefits, except as required by law.

This recruitment process will create a Civil Service eligibility register that will be used to fill full-time and part-time vacancies as they occur. The Civil Service Eligibility Register will remain in effect for six months, or longer as established by the Civil Service Commission at a later date. This position is represented by a union.

NATURE OF WORK:

The Custodial Maintenance Worker I performs a variety of janitorial duties at City maintained facilities. Duties include sweeping, mopping and vacuuming floors, operating carpet cleaning and floor waxing machines, cleaning/sanitizing restrooms, cleaning up spills, emptying trash containers and occasionally performing minor maintenance, and other duties as assigned. Employees in this position receive specific directions, but carry out tasks independently. Job assignments vary and may include evening/nights and weekend shifts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Cleans and maintains floors, carpets, walls and windows.

  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms/shower rooms and fixtures. Replaces tissue and restroom supplies.

  • Empties trash and recycling containers; keeps recycle and trash containers clean.

  • Locks and unlocks buildings; secures buildings when not in use by checking for unlocked doors, windows. Reports any unauthorized occupants.

  • Keeps carpets clean with periodic spot cleaning and full carpet cleaning as needed.

  • Uses hand equipment and power equipment such as broom, mop, squeegee, vacuum, buffer and polisher as required to clean and maintain buildings; uses ladders as required for assignments.

  • May occasionally perform minor maintenance tasks such as reset circuit breakers, turn off water in emergencies, replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes (using up to an eight-foot ladder).

  • Sets up and moves furniture for special events and returns to original location when program has ended.

  • Responds to and cleans up spills and sanitary hazards using appropriate infection control materials and techniques.

  • May occasionally, under direct supervision, make minor repairs to electrical switches, plumbing fixtures, clogged drains, steam and water lines.

  • May (with manual or power equipment) remove snow or debris from sidewalks, stairs, driveways, and entryways; or maintain grounds.

ADDITIONAL WORK PERFORMED:

  • Performs other related duties within the scope of the classification.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and on irregular terrain. May lift or otherwise move up to 50 lbs on a regular basis, occasionally up to 100 lbs with lifting equipment. Work entails the use of chemical cleaners and agents; may be exposed to noise and airborne particles.

Experience and Training

  • One year of recent (within the last 5 years) paid experience in janitorial work required, including experience operating carpet cleaning and floor waxing machines, mixing chemical cleaners and performing bio-hazard clean up.

  • Completion of janitorial training course may substitute for six months of work experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

  • Employment contingent upon passing a criminal conviction and local background check and fingerprinting.

  • Ability and willingness to be called out in response to occasional custodial emergencies.

  • Some positions require a valid Washington State driver's license at the time of hire. Must submit a three-year abstract of driving record prior to hire.

The top scoring 15 candidates or the top 25%, whichever is greater, will be referred to the Department for final assessment.

This position is represented by the Guild of Pacific Northwest Employees bargaining unit. Civil Service Information

This position is subject to the Bellingham Civil Service Commission. When a vacancy occurs, the top fifteen candidates or the top 25% of the register will be forwarded to the department for further consideration. All new Civil Service employees are subject to a one-year probationary period. A candidate may challenge the scope, content, or method of an examination or test, and a protest may be filed in writing with the Examiner within five (5) days following the date of the challenged examination.
